Would you happen to have a Windows XP or Windows 7 Disc lying around someplace?

  1. Windows XP Setup
    • Useful for Managing & Creating new Partitions with ease.
  2. Windows 7 Setup
    • Useful for almost EVERYTHING pertaining to a Drive before OS Boot.
If you have a Windows 7 Disc, pop it in, restart your PC. Boot from the Disc, choose "Repair my Computer" and select one of the options available. The most useful tool, in my opinion, would be the access to the Command Prompt.

  • The Default Start-Up Drive in "PriorBoot Prompt" is X:\
    • Simply type in C:\ {Hit Enter} to "Hook" to the C Drive.
      • Now, feel free to run the /sfc scannow, or chkdsk /f to check for System File issues.
Hope all is well. :)

Susan, PW Help says you need to assign a drive letter to Check File System. None of the partitions shown in your screenshot have a drive letter that I see.

It should be easy to assign a drive letter to data partition. For the empty OS partition and other Acer partitions, you may need to delete them, then create and format one partition on that HD to give a letter to do file check. This needs to be done anyway to reinstall Win7.

Running chkdsk /f from the DVD Repair command line will also require having the drive letter so you can select the partition to chkdsk. Boot into Win 7 DVD Repair console, select Command Line, type "chkdsk C:" then "chkdisk /f" replacing C: with each partition you want checked.

I gave Acer label (C) but when I right click on it "Check File System " is blanked out

Boot into Win7 DVD, select Repair on second screen, then click through to Recovery Tools list, open a Command Line to type:

chkdsk C:
chkdsk /r

After it runs, try booting the GWScan CD (it should autostart) to run diag/repair on C hard drive.

When it is finished, you can use it to write Zeros to your Acer HD, as long as you are sure it is not zeroing the data drive instead. This gets the HD cleanest possible.

Then boot the Win7 DVD, select Custom Install, click Drive Tools to create New partition, format before install.

Thanks for replies . problem sorted now thanks

Susan
