As an average user, I had something happen yesterday that I have never ran into before and need some help recovering some files created.

I woke yesterday morning to find my laptop with a completely different desktop and all files/folders apparently erased from my laptop...all applications were there. I thought I had been hacked and immediately freaked and begin trying to restore from an offline backup since I had things due in a few hours. However, the backup was from two weeks ago and had a lot of gaps in documents and accounting information created in that time period. I spent most of the morning recreating or creating documents to do some billing that were due. After spending hours doing this, I found my data by chance when I clicked on my profile/documents. Apparently, it appears Windows automatically updated my laptop (which I have turned off), restarted my computer under a different user and never completed the installation. Once I figured this out, I completed the updates install and logged back in to find everything is back, but now I can't find any of the documents I created yesterday before figuring this out. Can anyone tell me where these may be? I have no idea which profile they were created under and looked in all know user folders and can't find them. I have searched by date and nothing. Any help is greatly appreciate and will save me considerable time recreating them again.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. One would assume they will be in documents on the other users profile so if you login again as that user and check

I would agree, but I am the only user on the laptop, setup as Administrator. That's what is so puzzling about this. I am not sure how the laptop even started up using any other profile than mine and why I was so alarmed when i saw a completely different desktop and none of my documents.

If it logged in with another profile it must be there under users unless your restore has destroyed it what did you use to do restore disk image?

When I got to my office yesterday morning that's when I realized something happened overnight while the laptop was left on. It was a new desktop and my documents were not where they should be. It appears Windows restarted my laptop, but the updates install must have started in a new profile instead of completing the updates install. Later in the day I realized that Windows had updated my machine, I restarted it and the updates started loading and when finished it restarted to my profile and everything was there except all the work I did yesterday morning prior to figuring out what happened. I have gone "Users" folders and looked in each one and can't find the documents I created yesterday. Unless something is hidden or it's a permissions issue, which it shouldn't be, I'm the Administrator, they are not where I can see them.

Even as admin you can't access other users folders you would have to take ownership failing that do a search of the hd as that can access folders. Are they docs missing or other software that may have set folders to save to
