Because computing doesn't revolve around games?

You need special hardware.

+1

Horizontal span was removed when WDDM 1.0 was introduced.

You either need a matrox dual/triplehead2go, or an ATI 58xx series with Eyefinity.

It is possible to get a dual monitor setup, I have it in my setup. It works great, except with games.

First why? Most games would look awful with the scene being split right down the middle. Second for most games even if you managed to get it to work, your 8400GS would likely at best would play it like a slideshow.

If you really want to try (a FPS would look real good with the crosshair split across two monitors) have a look here,

Essential Games List - WSGFWiki

and see if the game(s) even support running like that.

Let's clarify here. Yes you can have a dual monitor setup on Win7. You can have 3, 4, or more. What you cannot do is use your dual monitor setup to SPAN your desktop without certain hardware.

SPAN=Using all of your monitors to create one huge desktop. This CANNOT be done in Win7 without special hardware, as mentioned above. You can a purchase newer ATI Raedon graphics card that supports "Eyefinity" or you can purchase a Matrox DualHead2Go or TripleHead2Go box.

EXTEND=You CAN extend your desktop to your other monitors in Win7 without special hardware, as long as your card has dual outputs or you have multiple cards. You can move windows to each desktop, but not maximize windows or play games in one HUGE resolution. In order to maximize your windows to across all monitors and even extend your taskbar across the monitors, you need to run third party software in the background as Win7 doesn't have native support.

If you extend your desktop as described by Y0himba in his reply then Yes you can have a game displayed on one monitor and another window displayed on the other monitor.

If this is what you are trying to achieve then please follow the instructions below:
Right click on the background on your main monitor
  • If your 2 moniters are both shown in the window, then select 'Extend these displays' in the drop down 'Multiple Displays'
  • If not, then with both monitors switched on, select Detect, then repeat step 1;
  • If you want one specific monitor to display your menus etc then select that monitor at the top of the window and then click the seletion box marked 'Make this my main display'
Let me know if you need any more help.

It also depends on the game itself. The vast majority will lock your cursor to one screen, however there are a few odd ones that don't.
