clicked a link on DPreview and our monitor settings were changed by the linked site with the message that it would not display properly at our setting and needed to be changed! Linked site seems to be legit in other ways tho.

don't know exactly what changes were made from a techincal point of view other than aero seems to be minimized. but it kinda made a big change from a visual viewpoint that was noticeable.

any way to change back to how it was?

thanks

Do a virus Scan and then change the resolution of the monitor. Probably only the resolution was changed. I would give the virus scan top priority. You can change resolution from the control panel from the display option

just right click anywhere on your desktop that doesn't contain a shortcut and you can adjust the screen resolution. To reset the visual settings you click windows key> type "system" into the search bar > click system from the top of the list under control panel > advanced system settings > performance settings button, which brings up the visual effects. Default is the first option.. let window decide... hope that helps

Try clicking the "Auto" button or whatever is similar on your monitor, see if that helps.
That is if, its monitor settings only

Use System Restore to go back to before the change was made. Almost always the best solution.

I don't see how a website can change your monitor unless it somehow changed the Internet Explorer Zoom or Text Size on the Page tab. Check and adjust those.

Did it trick you into clicking anything when it prompted changing the screen settings? Then I would be very concerned that it has infected your system.

Check anyway by downloading and installing Avast free home and accepting the (deepest possible) boot scan it offers at install.

Then download and install Spybot S&D, update and run in Safe mode. This gives you a clean bill of health.

Avast is a keeper, best AV by far with no system impact. Spybot is great to have in your toolbox.

Thanks for reminding him greg. That was the first thing that I mentioned and seemed to be overlooked

I would definitely look for the cause, rather than running a System Restore, so that if it happens again, I would know where to look for the problem/solution...especially, if I intended to ever revisit that website. Chances are, I wouldn't.

If the OP is using a Microsoft browser then ActiveX could do that - however, I am not on the very latest in the scene!

A good reason not to use IE. The only time that I do is when doing Windows Update, and with W7's update function, I do that no longer, except in XP. The only other time that I will break it out, is if some website is programmed so backwardly that I have to use it.

A good reason not to use IE.

Not wanting to get into any dispute about browsers, as I have used and appreciate them all..

But at least give IE8 a chance, because IMO MS finally got it perfect.

Thanks for reminding him greg. That was the first thing that I mentioned and seemed to be overlooked

That's why I brought it back up.

Should be first on troubleshoot checklist given happenstances.

I personally have never seen a website with the ability to change your screen resolution. Something else is at work here.

If a website is programmed so backwardly that no other browser besides IE can read it, it's not worth going to

madtownidiot,

In general, I would agree, but I have found a few that are essential to me. For instance, eBay is not totally compatible with Opera. Sometimes when they hand me off to PayPal to make a payment, it fails without using IE. There are a few other websites with similar problems, but they don't come to mind at the moment. In an ideal world (cyberwise), all websites would be programmed according to current standards, and all browsers were compatible, but that is not the case.

I think that if anyone had an answer to his question, they would post it, regardless of any digression.

Back when I was an active member of the Opera Forum, I vaguely recall some discussions that might relate to this, but that was long ago...longer than my memory tends to function.

Not that it has much to do with this, I can remember years ago, I was experimenting by entering random urls, just to see what would happen, and when I input hell.com, I reached a very strange website, that when I decided that I really didn't want to go into, a window suddenly appeared, saying that it was going to close the browser window...it did, without any interreaction by me. The point is that a lot is possible by a malicious website, that is not commonly encountered on the web.
