Windows forgot my monitor settings

Yesterday, I needed to transport my computer, so I unplugged everything and set it up again when I got there. It worked fine there, but when I got back home, and set it up again, I noticed that the colors were really weird. The whole screen seems dimmer, and the reds look like purples and the blues look like greens.

At the same time, I noticed that my customized logon background had reverted to the Windows 7 default. I found that the registry value had changed, so I changed it back again. It works fine now.

I tried to recalibrate the display, but no amount of tweaking would fix it.

I have checked and rechecked my cables (making sure that they are in securely).

The only thing I can think of is my monitor is damaged, but that does not explain why my background changed.

Any theories/solutions?

update

Update: I had set my other monitor as the primary one, until I could fix the messed up one. I just woke up my computer, and suddenly my first monitor became my main one, and lo and behold, the colors were back to normal. Weird!
