Help with 8024402C error and DVD now not found in registry

I have been getting a windows 8024402C error and I can't fix it. I am a novice computer user. I went through your list of things to do and I can't download the SURT - my explorer tells me that it can't find microsoft download and boots me out of microsoft.

I did the second step and it did not find any integrity violations.

I am attaching the CBS file and the screen shot.

Then today I went to use my DVD player and the computer can't find it and is telling me I have a registry error.

First - try this.


Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

Also - please run the CheckSUR tool - there are signs of CBS corruption which it should be able to help with.


Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

I can't seem to get online with that computer now. Could it have sent some sort of error to corrupt the router. Also I tried the steps in your first reply and got a code 80072EFE error. I can't upload a screen shot until I figure out how to get it back online.

I get a windows can't start this hardware because its configuration in the registry is incomplete. If I can get the DVD player to work I found mywindows repair disk. Will that help

That sounds as if you may have malware installed.

Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM PRO' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

Delete everything it finds

Ran the malware and found one item which I deleted. Tried to update again and it won't work-still getting the original error. Dvd is still lost. Here is the screen shot of the other error that I am getting. Also tried to download the SURT again but I get booted saying that explorer cant find microsoft.download

OK - back to the first principles then....


download the CheckSUR tool to another PC, then copy it to the desktop of the affected one, and run it
you can copy the CheckSUR.log file back to your functional PC and post it from there.

What Anti-Virus is currently installed? What other AV's have EVER been installed?
Please open an Elevated Command Prompt and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

reboot on request and try Windows Update again.

Is an elevated command prompt a DOS prompt? I have AVG free, CC Cleaner and Defraggler - all free. The computer might have come with Norton but I don't use it

I went to a DOS prompt and pasted it-got "The requested operation requires elevation <run as administrator> - how do I change it to do it

The 'DOS prompt' hasn't existed in Windows since 2000, when Windows ME was released


Here are some instructions to make life easier
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Rebooted and tried to update windows and am still getting the error
