I have my headset plugged into the front green port which has a picture of headphones. Im not sure if the mic should be unmuted or a line in. Right now I can hear sound but I can not record. Does anyone know what could be causing this or what settings I should check?
I have sound blaster software which really only has 2 options to work with headsets and both are checked in the console. Automatically enable headphone settings and automatically mute speakers.

Hi nyliferocks,
Speakers should go into the green port yes. The Mic usually plugs into the red/pink port.

Hi nyliferocks,
Does your headset come with a mic too? If so does it have 2 jacks on it. Maybe 1 green and 1 red? Or is it USB?

The headset came with a 2.5mm jack and I purchased an adapter to make it a 3.5mm so it can plug into the computer. The headset has an attached mic and 1 ear piece. What would be the best jack to place it in? The front headphone jack is the closest so I was hoping I could use this to gain some flexability with the length of the cord.

This seems to be a common issue and is clearly a bug within Windows 7. I have a Creative X-Fi card which worked perfectly under XP.

It works perfectly under 7 too, except it will not pick up the microphone, saying it is not plugged in.

7 is a brilliant OS but given the volume of issues posted on various sites about recording devices not working, it's certainly something MS needs to look at.

Any advice would be great:

Intel M/B,
X-Fi soundcard
ATI Radeon 4800
4GB RAM
Dual core Pentium...

it's a very clean system with no mods.

Like I said, any ideas, let me know

cheers

I did have this problem with XP and I ended upgrading to 7 before I found a way to make this work. So I believe its just my settings.

I never fixed it. I meant to say, I upgraded to Windows 7 before I could find a way for it to work. So its still not working. Sorry for the typo. If anyone can help me and poster Richard B with our settings please let us know. :)

Sorry, but this is not suitable for connection to a computer. This model is designed for use with a mobile phone.

Even if I have the 3.5mm adapter on? So I can only use it as an ear piece maybe which can eliminate the echo

I've given up. My intel board has embedded audio so I'm going to remove my (2 month old) Creative and see if I can get the Mic to be picked up with Intel's version. I use Skype to stay in touch with family and friends in the UK so not having a Mic isn't an option. If this doesn't work I'll restore my Acronis backup with XP. I don't want to but no mic, no good.

Success! I took out the creative FX and the system instantly recognised my microphone. OK, it's not got all the features I wanted with the FX but at least I can now use Skype! So what have we learned: That Win 7 doesn't know how to deal with more than one iteration of a sound device. Maybe it's the same for people using built-in video cards too?

Hope this has been useful to someone.

Hi Richard B,
Before installing the Creative card did you disable the embedded audio in the bios? If not then no wonder Windows 7 was defaulting to the embedded audio device. :)

For someone who pops into this dialogue with less-than-useful tips your comment makes it sound as though this was obvious...

Given that was not necessary under XP how did you arrive at that conclusion?

Please don't troll Raj... either contribute or don't.

What about some kind of splitter that lets me plug in my headset to the headphone jack and the mic jack? Then could I make my headset work?
