Help with old IDE drive please

I want to format this old Samsung Spinpoint SV1204H and then clone the existing 40GB drive to it.

Now even after an extensive Google I cannot make head nor tail of the jumper settings I need to use to format then clone to it. As a matter of fact is this possible even using the same master / slave cable?? Or will I have to ?use the optical drive socket and cable to do this?

Am doing it because the old 40GB is getting VERY noisy and I don't want to lose the data on it as my friend has not got a back up install disk.

Any help greatly appreciated.

If you want to put it on the same cable as the optical drive that will be fine as long as the jumper setting doesn't conflict with that of your optical drive. I would suggest the middle band (upper 32GB) for either Master or Slave.
Although the full capacity of the drive is usually detected by the BIOS on any setting (except clip? I'm not sure about this mode!).

Top row. Master if it's the 1st drive in the chain, Slave if it's 2nd drive in the chain. CS if you don't know and try the let the computer sort it out. Both drives should be set to CS if you want the computer to sort it out for you.

Jumper settings doesn't matter if the drives are on separate channels.

Thanks you fellows yeah I couldn't work out what clip meant either and plus it is quite an old drive but better than the old Maxtor.

Now I might have to use that optical drive cable too as there are only two Molex power supplies (an old Dell Optiplex GX240)

Well I might as well just try that CS option and see what happens too

Have managed to complete the cloning the EaseUS worked perfectly and so quickly ans simply.

My last problem is that using the cloned drive as the machine main now as it is so much quieter than the old drive is that on boot the screen stays for every long time at the blue one with Dell and machine name on it.

It then goes to a black screen that asks me to hit F1 to retry bot which it does without a hitch. Now I cannot work out why this is happening as I have set the drive as the boot device in the BIOS - well I hope in the right order - so any thoughts please on what is happening.

I know the very boot it said detected new hardware - could it be just a driver issue?

For info the old drive was a Maxtor 40GB one and this "new" drive a Maxtor 60 GB one of approx the same vintage.

A slower initial boot from a cloned volume is entirely normal. When you clone a system, the physical location of files change and this affects the file clustering that the file system performs on the fly. As the files are read on subsequent boots, they will eventually get moved back into the proper file cluster on the disk.

Check the BIOS and in Windows Device Manager and see what DMA access mode is being used. Look for a difference between the 40GB drive and the 60GB drive. Ultra DMA 5 is normal. If it's dropping to a low Ultra DMA mode or to PIO mode, performance will be poor.

Yeha I thought it would be slower and was going to be happy with that but it was stopping at that F1 request.

So I did as a last fling and purely by guesswork / luck put back the floppy as an option for a boot source and set the drive as the first choice and bingo it starts as normal.

Thanks to everyone in my first days at doing this sort of thing I would have thought I'd killed it but again thanks to all you fellows here and other friends I've learnt to be patient
