Does Home Premium have the image backup that professional and ultimate has?

Yes, it does. I think the only significant difference is where you can place the backups. On Pro and Ultimate, you can put images on a network drive.

Isn't that a bit of an overkill on MS's part (trying to get us to pay more in order to back up to a Network drive)?
What's to prevent one from backing up locally and then moving the back-up file to a Mapped NETWORK DRIVE?

Nothing. However, there are other differences, not related to the backup feature, between the various versions. But for the vast majority of people, Home Premium has everything one would reasonably need. Nice of MS to make HP so full featured, don't you think?

YES IT IS!!! The licensed copy is not included you have to use your own. By XP Mode as they call it, is nothing more then the tools you install in the virtual machine. And that VM could be XP, Vista, or even 7.

No but you can install the MS Virtual PC or Machine which you have to do to install XP Mode anyway and then, what I think he's saying is that you can then install a virtual XP machine with your own copy (and key) for XP, which is basically the same thing as XP Mode. Just a different route of installation and you have to have your own valid copy/key of XP.

Aye that is what I was trying to say Harpua, thanks.

XP Mode does not equal the copy of Windows XP you get if you have Pro or Ultimate. XP Mode is the virtualization addons you install in the virtual guest OS. If you have your own copy of Windows XP or Vista or 7 you can install it in Virtual PC, install the addons and get the integration.

Honestly, I haven't found a virtualization package which provides less performance than XP Mode. XP Mode is great for those who haven't seen or used virtualization before. For anybody with some experience, it's terribly slow startup performance is obvious. I use Sun VirtualBox and it takes 1/2 the time to boot the VM's.

I believe Xpmode is more than just loading virtual pc and then a licensed copy of xp. This will work (and does not require hardware Virtualization) because I've done it in the past. It has it's limitations however. Xpmode is much more robust and requires hardware virtualization (VT). So there is a difference.

There really isn't much that is "more" robust about XP Mode. The only real advantage to XP Mode is the licensed copy of Windows XP and the fact that you can access the applications loaded within that virtual machine directly from the host itself.

With that said, I've found the performance of XP Mode to be awful compared to either VMWare or Sun VirtualBox. I'm not sure what Microsoft did to accomplish such dismal performance, but I've discussed it numerous times on the technet forums and other than using another product, there really isn't a solution.

Before Win 7, I had vista ultimate on my system and I was running Virtual Pc with xp utimate installed. I was sluggish and had poor support for usb and other stuff. The new Xpmode runs great. It's as difference as night and day on my computer. I've tried VMware and it's great too. On the whole, it's (VMware) probably better than virtual pc.
