Solved How can I get permission to a dual boot windows drive?

I have been experiencing problems again and I wanted to copy contents from a dual boot win 7/win 10 drive onto a backup before starting over with win 10

Presently Win 7 boots -- I am in win 7 and trying to open my win 10 drive (partitioned) - which has always been accessible. I see the drive letters for the win 10 partition - and now it tells me

"e is not accessible
Access is Denied"

This has never happened before. From win 7, how can I get privileges so I can look into the drive and copy the info from win 10?

It willl be ntfs permission cant you copy from 10 to 7?

Win 10 is the problem. I cannot boot it. I can boot win 7. I am using win 7 now.

From inside win 7, I can see all of my win 10 drives (partitioned), but and this is new, I cannot access the main win 10 drive anymore.

I have tried from win 7 to get permissions to the win 10 windows drive, through explorer and when it reaches RECOVERYtxt, it says

"An error occurred while applying security information to e: recovery.txt, access is denied"

EDIT : I can see the drive fully in the cmd prompt.

I am in the process of trying to copy the files I need via cmd prompt to backup drive. Why I cannot do this in Win 7 file explorer, I don't know!

I have had this problem and resolved it by running explorer as administrator. Close all explorer windows first. Take ownership of the drive.

Nope, I tried it, doesn't work.
Right now I am having issue using CMD to try and copy the content of the drive to a backup. I want to copy the entire Window directory to a backup for now, but I cannot get the cmd line right!

Boot to a USB boot drive such as Hiren's Boot 15 or a Linux distro.

Run a disk check on E:
Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
chkdsk E: /f


Boot from Win 10 installation drive.
When you get to the install now window hi shift+F10 to open a CMD window.
Try to navigate to folder you have your files.

The best way is to make a Linus USB drive to have GUI. And Linux can bypass some windows restrictions.

I am managing to by-pass with my dual boot using Win 7. I have used the cmd line to xopy the files i need so far, but I find it easier to see and be organized with file explorer.
The issue is how I got here in the first place - I don't want it happening again.

What Linux usb do you recommend? I have an old one from 2009 but it might be too old...

Did you run check disk on E: ?

I have Lubuntu
Or Mint

I have recently run a Custom install to solve the issue, but I never found a solution to my problem. Thanks for the help though.
