How can I install Netscape Communicator 4.79 on win7-64 Home OR Pro

I am still using netscape 4.79 for E-Mail only on Win98/ME. I do not use it as a browser. I have never found another email program that I can tolerate so I would like to install it on Windows 7.

If anybody knows how to do this it will be appreciated.

Netscape 7.2 was their final version that included mail. You'll find a lot of download sites for version 9.0.0.6 but those don't have mail, are just the browser. Here's a guy who discusses running 7.2 mail on a modern system. He says he installed it on Win8 without a problem. Just click and install. You will need to link it up with up your gmail/yahoomail/whatevermail of course, like any mail client.

Thank you for reminding me about 7.2. I have looked at it long ago, my search seems to have been forever, and rejected it for some reason.

I will look at it again but if I find a way to use 4.79 I will prefer that.

The problem is its a 16-bit program. It will run on 32-bit win7 but not 64-bit. If you are on 64-bit win7 you will need WinXp mode or Dosbox, either of which may present other issues to surmount. Probably easier to just figure out how to use 7.2

The other alternative would be to install VMware Workstation Player in Win 7, and then in VMware install Windows 98se. Though, I don't know if you can install Win 98se in VMware or not. You might be able to. If not, then there's XP that may work with Netscape. Doing this allows you to run two operating systems in one. In VMware you have what is called the guest, and your main Win 7 OS is the host. When ever you want to read your email just fire up VMware and you have a Win 98se platform right there in Win 7.

If you have the Win 98se disk, simply use IMGBurn portable to copy the disk as an ISO file. Then in VMware direct it to the ISO for installation. It's not hard at all. Just make sure you install VMare Tools once you get 98se or XP installed into VMware. Or just direct VMware to your Win 98se disk LOL

As always, scan all downloads at Virus Total. VirusTotal You really don't need to scan VMware. If they offered a hash then you could use a program called Hash Calculator to compare the hashes.

Just checked. You can install Windows 98 and all the way back to Windows 3.1 in VMware Workstation Player.

can OP use Netscape 4.8 (or 4.80) instead of 4.79? v4.8 was the last of the Netscape 4.x series (though its installer is 16bit)
