You can manually put them in alphabetical order by highlighting them, and holding down your cursor and sliding up or down to whatever position you wish. I have done that and have never had a problem.

Moving the start menu items works as long as they are not pointers to directories. I was able to move
up and down my start menu items but not the ones that are pointers to directories. I just right click the program and drag them to where I want them.

My All Programs are sorted by programs first and then directories.

I don't understand why the directories won't move. Such is the wonders of computers.:)

I have dos 6.22, wfwg 3.11, win98, 2000 and xp VHD's available for testing. MS's Virtual PC works great.
The menu items I am refering to are the run icons that I have selected to be pinned to the start menu and are placed by the system when pinned on the left of the start menu, they are placed in the order that I have pinned them there at that time, should I want then to re-order them, I cannot move them.
I am comming to the conclusion re-shuffling them is not possible, if anybody knows better I would love to hear.
Thank you for your time.

As Imperfect1 and richnrockville said, you need to but your cursor ove the start menu item, hold down either mouse button and move it to anywhere on the LEFT side of the menu. There will be a black line appear as you do this to help you place it.

Thanks a lot but I have tried this many times and it does not work. It is the menu items on the left that I have pinned there that are the problem, they remain in order as I pinned them, I have concluded moving them into a position that I would like cannot be done with windows 7 64bit.

Mine is Windows 7 Ultimate and works well. First snip is before moving, second is cursor over item WITH mouse button down, last shows the moves item highlighted.

The last one has a different pic because my cursor was parked over Help and Support.

Thank you for all your help, but I still cannot move my Start Menu items.
My Screen is the same as yours, the only difference i can see you are using Windows 7 Pro, were as I am useing Windows 7 Home Edition.
If I select a menu item the press my mouse button to drag it all the happens is the program I selected opens the program.
I will be away now for 1 week so unable to answer any more advise you may have to give me, should you have any it really would be appreciated as I am just about going loopy trying to sort this problem out.
Thank you all once again will look forward to when back checking this forum.
Thank you.

Hi, I had the same problem in Windows 7 Home Edition. What I finally figured out was to ...
Right-click the Start button
Click Properties
Click Start Menu tab
Click Customize
Scroll down almost to the bottom and find Sort All Programs menu by name
Uncheck the box and
Click OK.

Hope it works for you!
