How can I shutdown a server?

Hi everyone,
So basically, our school uses a system where the domain login username and password will be used to login to some online sites that our school owns. They domain and the sites have the same hostname ( .blah.blah.blah.blah). Is there a way to shut it down? Also, authorized people are allowed to make changes to the site (grades and etc). Is that group of people the same one in the domain? Or are the two systems completely separate and the admin of the site has to give permissions separately? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Are the sites at the school or an ISp what o/s are they running you can shutdown a server via the shutdown cmd

The first thing I recommend is contact the schools I.T. department and request help.

They just don't let anybody access a system that grades can be changed.

Obviously a server can be shut down and there are occasions when this is necessary.

But shutting a server down is not the same as shutting down a computer used by one individual. A file sever exists to share files over the network and at any given time there may be many people accessing it. Proper procedures must be followed to ensure these individuals are not inconvenienced and that no data is lost. Obviously only trusted and competent individuals should be trusted with that responsibility.

To shut down a server you must have an account on the server and it must have the rights to do that. Standard user accounts do not. Typically that would mean an admin level account if this is a Windows server. Such an account has the power to do a great deal of damage if used improperly. Usually only the domain admin and a small number of trusted individuals would have such an account.

It seems to me that anyone with such an account would already be well aware of shutdown procedures and many other things.
