How could i overclock my intel i3 550?

I tried to do it in the bios but their are no power options related to overclocking at all, are there any good alternatives that won't fry my pc and turn it into a oven?

i doubt any extra juice you get will be noticeable. Even with proper cooling, the gain is trivial. However you can go ahead if you want.

Why do you say that? You can overclock the i3-550. Your motherboard, chipset, and BIOS have to support it though.

Well it is a a prebuilt pc so that should have been expected

I find my pc to be really slow although its clean of everything, virus junk files, defragment etc.

Should i start looking into a new pc or what?

That is different than saying the processor is not oveclockable though. I expect the BIOS on the PC won't let you.

Replace the HDD with a SSD and you will get a BIG performance boost - and the laptop will run cooler too. That will beat any CPU overclock.

The extra CPU juice you would really only notice in very specific allplications like e.g. video encoding. But the extra juice from the SSD you will see all around (except for the web where you depend on your line speed).

I have a HP ProBook 4530 and I added a ssd and maxed the ram at 8gb, it's not going to blow away any i7 rig any day soon but it more than holds it's own. Ram is so inexpensive as are ssd's relative to hdd's I would strongly suggest these when you can and you can place your current hdd in an external enclosure and run via usb. Otherwise save your monies and watch for a gaming i5-i7 rig on sale as I'm seeing i7's as low as $599usd....oh and you live in discount electronics heaven in NY.

Actually they are not that bad in price. They had an OCZ Vertex 120GB on sale for $110 - at TigerDirect. If you put that in relation to the currently very high prices of HDDs, it is a good deal (considering the amazing speed of a SSD).

Btw is it hard to install a ssd i dont have anything on my harddrive worth keeping anyway.

It's a snap and many great comments available here to assist you. It all starts with having your W7 install disc and the other software discs for the programs and games you use. Actually the process is greatly speed up with and ssd and once everything is loaded the boot and shut down speeds plus calling up a program is lightening quick. Also much less power drain and runs totally cool.
