Your screenshot confirmed my hunch that you had nowhere to add an internal mechanical drive for storage. My personal advice would be to forego (what will be endless) disc burning and add an external USB drive. In my case, I took the old hard drive out of my laptop when I upgraded to an SSD and bought an $8 USB case for it. My puny little 64GB SSD is enough to hold the programs I need when I'm on the go and the 500GB drive I turned into an external drive supplies all the data I would ever need to carry around with me. Windows boots in no time, programs load fast - and I can still have all my stuff.

This is what I got:

Note that you'll need to get either SATA or PATA (IDE), depending on the old drive.

Good question. I'll let you know as soon as I figure out how to tell. However, I recall Windows taking like 50GB. For now, know that My Documents is 12GB.

I already have 2.4 TB of external storage.

I purchased this big, somewhat powerful (for a laptop), and heavy, full-sized laptop because I do not like dinky little travel laptops and I do not like having multiple computers to synchronize. Therefore, I bought this big thing to be more like a "portable" desktop. I can do everything I need whether I'm at school, my mom's or my dad's, or tutoring someone. There is not much on here which can be uninstalled.

My lecture recordings are fixed and I would like them on more permanent media than an HDD - therefore, I will burn them. But I still need to figure out what I can clean from my SSD.

But I have to go to bed now (early morning teaching tomorrow). So I will have to pick this up tomorrow. Thanks, all, for now.

A garden variety install of Window 7 Home Premium takes no more than 20 GB in my experience.

I assume you keep your files in a standard location. How large is C:\users\your-user-name??

How many programs appear in Control Panel/programs and features? I have about 60.

How large is C:\Windows? Mine is 16 GB out of a total of 30 GB occupied space on C.

Have you made any overt attempts at disk cleanup, such as using the built-in function in Windows 7 or CCleaner?

I have to believe that a lot of your data is something other than text files (Word, Excel, .txt, etc). After over 15 years of PC activity, I have LESS than 1 GB devoted to Word, Excel, other text files, PDFs, and images.

Do you have many thousands of pictures?

Do you have any audio or video files--that's what eats up space rather quickly.

Run WinDirStat - then you know what's on the disk.
