Solved How do I change Windows 7 sleep state settings(S3 to S1)?

For stability and security reasons I can't use the standby sleep S3, S4 or hybrid states for this PC. I need to try if S1 would solve the problems but I don't know how to change/switch to S1 sleep state.

PC does support S1 from the reports below and in bios there is nothing in regards to S1, S3, closest things would be C1, C2 etc which are enabled.

Fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and the latest drivers:
Intel 2500K
Asus P8Z68-V Pro
16GB ram
SSD
AMD 6950x2
sound card

I've seen this issue before and I don't know if there is a way to change the default Windows sleep state from S3 to S1.
I've never had a MB with the newer UEFI bios.
Also, never had one that enabled S1 and S3 without the option to choose one or the other.

I also would like to know if anyone has found an solution for this... registry tweek, etc.
I use Sleep and Hibernate all the time, and it's great when it works correctly.

I'm glad I don't have a MB/BIOS like this, and it just adds a requirement for me when choosing a new MB / Build.
From what I know Windows doesn't support changing the default state, and this BIOS doesn't allow selecting one for this MB...

Is there a newer BIOS for your MB?
Maybe ask Asus about this, and refer them to this thread if that would help ?

You should be able to disable Hybrid Sleep in Windows Power Options / Advanced settings.
You should also be able to disable Hibernate (S4) in Windows with an elevated CMD powercfg.exe -h off

This won't solve your S1/S3 issue, but something you can try.
You could also try gathering a Sleep trace and see if one of the experts in the "Crashes and Debugging" sub-forum can help.

Personally I don't like S1 sleep, and prefer using S4 hibernate (or turn the PC off) if S3 sleep doesn't work.
With S1 the fans run, more noise, more power used...

Can I ask what stability and security requirements require you to use a S1? (S1 is not fully sleeping compared to S3) In order to use S1 you have to turn S3 off in the BIOS.

Thanks for the replies, didn't know S1 keeps the fans running so forget that! Not like I have the options to change it in the bios (using latest).

Stability issue because the mobo needs a setting enabled in bios called "Internal PLL Overvoltage" for any overclock over 4.5ghz to be able to boot into windows, with it disabled it freezes at Windows logo screen. But with it enabled, S3 sleep wakes about 4 out of 5 times.

For security I use several layers. One of the layers that causes the problem is a light virtualization app covering the OS. If this was done with virtualization app installed, the current state would be lost on restart and back to the previous clean state.

Since I can't wake from S3 sleep, I tried hibernate. So hibernation state is a state where the current state of the workstation is saved to the hard disk drive and the computer is powered off. Found that the app will allow standby and other power saving states that do not rely on saving data to the hard disk since the current state would be lost on restart, so the app disables it.

Had an idea for this fix after posting here. To use the 4.5ghz OC from bios and use the motherboard overclocking app from within Windows. Didn't get too far with that...

I refuse to give up 5.2ghz overclock over 4.5ghz
which would solve all this nonsense but the performance boost is huge in the apps I use it for (like a new PC, though no benefits in non cpu intensive activity like browsing). I guess my onyl option is a complete shutdown.

Hey David, I finally found couple solutions! !

1. First download app called dumppro.exe by Microsoft here:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/products/Oemtest/v1.1/WOSTest/Tools/Acpi/dumppo.exe

2. Put the file into C: drive.

3. Go to the dumppro.exe location from CMD.

4. Now type: dumppo admin
Shows that the minimum sleep state is S1 by default on my PC.



5. Now to Change default S1 to S3 type: dumppo admin minsleep=S3



Finish! I restarted to make sure before trying sleep (in case PC doesn't wake and loose the settings I just made) and double checked to disable hibernate (donn't want to keep writing 16GB to my SSD's just to hibernate everytime to save the write life -- well I can't hibernate anayways because of the virtualization security app).

Tried sleeping and waking 22 straight times, works everytime! And now further testing by using the PC as I normally would, so far 7 times no problem.

Been bothered by this problem ever since I got this PC last summer trying to fix it on and off and now finally resolved!
