How do I check my backup image?

I am wondering how I can test my backup image of my hard drive? I just did the backup last night for a class I am taking and now they ask us to move a file and test our backup image. How do I do this? I am completely new to computers so any help or instructions would be great! Thanks!

Let's assume you are talking about the Windows inbuilt system image capability.

The first test would be to boot to a System Repair CD/DVD/USB. Then select restore image and check that your image can be located. In this test the image should ideally be on an external HDD. Now if it is a USB3 external then you need to know how to load the USB3 drivers. Once the image has been recognized just cancel the process.

The second test would be to attach/mount the image. Then you can extract (copy out) a file or folder to some temporary location. This tutorial shows how:

The ultimate test is to actually perform a successful system restore. The safest way is to restore to a single connected internal new/spare HDD. You need a bit of cash for an extra HDD.
