How do I disable automatic updates in Office 2013?

I just downloaded and installed Office Home & Student 2013 several hours ago. A few minutes ago "Click-to-Run" ate up all my (very limited) bandwidth for 10-15 minutes. Because of my limited bandwidth I want no product automatically updating - I need to schedule such things. How do I make sure the office products do not automatically download anything?

Open one of the Office programs, such as Excel, when it opens select "File" up on the LH top of the screen, the look down the list & you will see "Accounts" select that & it will show a couple of dialogue boxes one of which is Updates. You can then disable Updates with this.
I certainly would not recommend disabling it for security reasons & keeping your Office right up to date.
I use Office 2013 Pro & I find that most automatic updates seem to occur about the middle of the month, if that is any help.
Also automatic Office updates run in the background so unless you happen to be watching your download meter, you will not be aware they have been done.

Thank you. I see that disabling automatic updates in one Office product disabled it in all.

I appreciate your recommendation, but I think I'll ignore it. I'll occasionally manually check for updates.

If that had been the case I would not have noticed anything was happening. Instead, I was hung in my browser waiting forever for some Google search results to be displayed. With 2 PCs sharing a slow DSL connection I have to be very choosy about when to do when to download anything. There is nothing "background" about Office behavior except that the user is not notified.

I can see your point about auto updates in your case. Yes I agree about not being notified about updates, it is frustrating even for me as I use auto updates, but I never really know if they have been done.
Also I don't know what really happens if an update is in progress of which you are unaware & you shut down the computer. Does it automatically start up again when you restart your computer???????. I hope so.

Everybody has different needs - there's nothing wrong in doing updates as and when you want them

If you want to download a whole slew MANUALLY (say on a fast computer connection) use the Ms catalog of updates

Microsoft Update Catalog

then save these on external HDD / USB drive and install at home where you have a slower internet connection.

I just checked the Microsoft Update Catalog & you have to be using IE6 or later. It will not work with Opera 17.
I will try later with IE11.

I also have Windows set for auto updates. But with Office 2013 updates are NOT notified in the normal Windows update system. Office 2013 updates are supplied automatically & there is no notification of any pending updates, they are just installed in the background, unless you have Office updates turned off. Refer to post 2 above, on how to do this.
