Hi everyone

i am using windows 7 on my HP laptop.

I am trying to edit my host file . This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

The location of the file is: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

The systems on my laptop seem to be incorrectly configured to prevent me from editing this file.

i opened the host file doc with notepad and then tried to edit it and save the file.

However, each time i tried to edit the file, my system gave me the following message:

You don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission
Would you like to save in the My Documents folder instead?

this has to be incorrect - as i entered notepad as a system administrator . So i don't know why its giving this message.

is there anywhere where i can go on the system to reconfigure windows to allow me to edit this folder/ or to grant permission to the system administrator to edit the folder?

warm regards

Andreea

hi

i Boolhah. thank you for your reply. i went to the UAC and changed the settings to Zero but to know effect .

am i supposed to reboote my computer?

Also, i noticed that the UAC is for the notification of administrators when a change is made to teh computer. is this, therefore, the correct button to change. is there another panel that needs to be changed that will actually allow me to make changes to the host file.

warm regards

you have to reboot when you turn off UAC,
once done it will be fine.
then turn it back on after.
there is no other panel needs to open.
when you turn it back on you dont need to reboot.

Hi Boohah.

thank you so much. i will do that .

do i need to turn it right down?

if so, is that safe to the systems- i mean. does it expose me to viruses etc.

warm regards

it will be fine whilst you edit the hosts file.
then once its done and the changes made then slide it back up to where you want.
