I have 7 home premium of my laptop and am networked with VPN to 7 ulimate and I cannot get my local printer to work. My IT guy suggested that I get an HP 2305 instead of my wireless HP Envy but neither one will print. In the remote connection box I have printers checked. If I print to the Envy it will print the work after I logout of the remote session. Any suggestions would be great. I am snowed in and can't get any work done.

Can you print using a wired connection? Also, you need to set up printer sharing for both computers. Is there aa special reason why \you are using a VPN, such as working from home to a remote location (ie. office). Windows 7 is very good with multiple versions of itself and using one machine as a host for printing. Your IT person should be able to get this done.
As an example: I have 5 machines running 2 versions of Windows 7. They can all print to my main computer's printer because I have fully enabled File and Printer sharing and the drivers auto install during the setup process (after putting them on the main machine that is hard-wired to the printer. This would hold true for a setup using a wireless printer as well.

Let us know if this idea works.

I am using the VPN to work from home. The drivers are installed on the computer at the office as well as on my laptop. When I am using the remote session the printer comes up as (redirected) and it won't let me change any settings. Do I need to have the driver installed on the network drive instead on just on the hard drive of the computer I am logged in to? The redirected printer properties do not have the print permission checked but I can't seam to access it to change the setting. The printer that I can't get to work is hard wired to my laptop, I can print to any of the printers at the office, which doesn't help. When I am not in remote session the printer works fine.

You need to have the Network Drive/Server included. Chances are that the administrators will also have to change settings.
You say that when NOT in remote session the printer works fine. Is that when you are in the office?
You also note that you have a "local" printer. Is this the one that is in question? Also, I did ask if you had tried using it in hard wired to your laptop mode, while accessing data via the VPN.

Sorry I should clarify. I have a laptop and printer at my house. I use VPN to login to my office so I can work from home. When I am logged in I can send print jobs to the printers at the office but not to the one at home. I don't get any error message it just doesn't print. If I am not logged in to the office and am running Word etc I can print on my home printer with no issues. It is only when using the VPN that I have problems.

Might I suggest that you save the document locally and then print it on the home printer. That or you need to reconfigure the VPN to give permission. I think you understand that a VPN is a tunnel into a host system and there are rules set by the administrators. Hope this sheds a little light and a test as well.
