Hello BFK,

I am trying to do a fresh install from a dvd to resolve a random freezing and restart issue I was facing.

While doing the fresh install, I am stuck in the restart loop and came across your tutorial on SFC scan.

First of all, it does not boot from dvd in normal mode and I have to boot it in safe mode using F8. If I try to boot in normal mode from dvd, it either freezes on windows logo or auto restarts after windows logo is displayed.

Anyways, after I boot from dvd in safe mode, windows installation completes and the machine restarts. Then it won't start in normal mode from the HDD. That forces me to I use the safe mode once again to boot from HDD. However, it does not come up in safe mode giving the error that windows cannot complete installation in safe mode and installation will be completed after restart. But I cannot get it to boot in normal mode so I am stuck.

This is where I go back to the installation DVD and boot the machine in safe mode to get to the command prompt in system recovery options, so that I can run sfc scan. But here also I am not able to progress much. After following the steps given in your tutorial (tried method 1 & 2 with no luck), I get the message that there is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart windows and run SFC again.

Please help how do I get out of this restart loop.

Boot from DVD in safe mode? As I never saw it done, (Didn't even know was possible) can you explain how do you do it?
What media are you using to do the installation?
Did you do a clean install? Clean Install Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums
As it is a Laptop, don't you have the factory recover DVD's?
As it only start in safe mode, a driver is missing or have a defective hardware that when try to start generate an error.
SFC or System File Check is to do a check on an existing installation. Won't help on your problem.

Thanks Megahertz07 for your quick response.
I am doing a clean install following me steps given in the link you shared.
I do not have the recovery disc that came with the laptop. Hence, I am using a dvd with iso image of windows 7. I have also tried using an external SSD.
To boot in Safe Mode using Win7 DVD - When I see a message 'Windows is loading files', I press F8 and get prompted with varios boot options.
I have already tried replacing memory sticks. What other hardware problem can I check for. Also, how can I checek that if any drivers are missing.

Please read the tutorial Megahertz07 has posted again, until you understand it.
Their is nothing in the tutorial about Safe Mode. You don't even have a Safe Mode until Windows 7 is installed properly. Could you possibly be wanting a Repair Install?

Win 7 freezes on startup

I have the dreaded Win 7 lockup at the startup logo. Freezes at the first dot. Then will either ask to repair (which it never can do) or start normally back to the boot screen. On my HP, if I then click on ESC in boot up it will give me the boot drive selection. The first drive is highlighted and the correct drive. I then click on enter (choosing the first drive) and windows starts normally. :geek:

Also no Safe mode....and repair says it can't repair the problem.

At first I suspected my new Samsung SSD as the problem occurred shortly after install. However, swapping it out and booting from my old Samsung HD, which the SSD replaced, I still get the same situation.

Note: I did have a problem with the CMOS battery going bad around this time, (clock changing time etc) I replaced the battery and reconstructed the BIOS.

I haven't run any memory checks yet, but I am wondering if the BIOS chip is going??

I can live with this for now and just wanted to mention how I got it running in case someone else with the problem wants to try it.

1. To do a Clean Install you boot from the Windows 7 Microsoft DVD.

2. To do a Repair Install you boot into your Windows 7 computer and then open the Windows 7 DVD.

So we don't keep going in many directions at the same time, tell us exactly what kind of install you want.

Here is some more reading and learning that might help you.
