I can't figure this out. How do I click and drag a photo to wherever I want in order with my other photos in the same folder? I read forums and someone said to select them all, rename them, and they will become xyz(1), xyz(2) etc....but first, I need to DRAG and DROP them in the order I want them to be named! So how do I do this, or is windows stupid now and doesn't have that option available? Because I can't find it!

No, I assure you that it's quite real. If you like, give it a try and see. The example screenshot in the tutorial can help show you some of what you can do with auto arrange disabled. If you decide you don't like it, then you could just do OPTION TWO to undo it and go back to default.

I must be nuts, Brink! I still can't move my pictures around in the window. How can I be sure the disable download has taken effect? I looked in all my programs and I don't see it.

Lisa,

This will not work in a library if that is where you are trying to move them at. Double check the items in the blue NOTE box at the top of the tutorial to see if they may apply. In addition, the example screenshots in the same tutorial below can help show you what it looks like when you drag items into any arrangement and/or position.

I spent 2 hours on the phone with HP today and gave them access to my computer to try to get the "disable" to work. We got nowhere. Their conclusion is that it just won't work. Bummer.

I'm going to start researching programs so I can find one that will do what I need it to do. Any ideas?

It works, but it just depends on how you're using it.

Were you ever able to run the Disable_Windows_7_Explorer_Auto_Arrange.bat file?

If so, are you trying to arrange items in a library folder??

What were the results of the blue NOTE box and red WARNING box at the top of the tutorial?

Hi Brink,

Well, after 2 hours on the phone with an HP tech, whom I allowed access to my PC, it couldn't be done. The Tech actually uninstalled the "disable bat" that I had downloaded, saying it could harm my computer.

What I wanted to do with my pictures is identify people in them, make captions, organize them and make a video with music to share with my family. I was only able to identify people and make captions in Windows Live Photo Gallery. After a day-and-a-half of trying to find out how to "organize" the photos the way I wanted them to be organized (through tutorials, HP and the Forum), I gave up and was tempted to just purchase a program that would do what I need it to do.

So....I was just playing around and I clicked on "Movie" at the top of my Windows Live Photo Gallery page. My pictures transfered to Movie Maker. I read the tutorial for Movie maker and fond out I could move the pictures around to get them "just the way I wanted them". :D UREKA! Once I did that, I added music to the movie and shared my movie with my family by uploading it to a link. I also burned a DVD that I could play on my TV.

That's exactly what I wanted to do and I thought I explained that to the HP tech and in my first posts to the Forum. Why didn't anyone catch on to what I needed to know?

The bottom line is...in Windows Live Photo Gallery one CANNOT move photos around (drag and drop), but you can drag and drop them in Windows Movie Maker. I hope this is helpful to some that seem as frunstrated as I was.

Regards,

Lisa

i think we got the impression you wanted to move the pictures in any order in an explorer window, not specifically drag and drop pictures into Windows Live Photo Gallery.
anyhow at least you had a positive result in the end
well done :)

I'm happy to hear that you got it how you wanted. Thank you for posting back with your results. :)

Sorry. I was under the impression you wanted to move them around in Windows Explorer how you like and not with "Windows Live Photo Gallery". Unfortunately, you never mentioned "Windows Live Photo Gallery" or "Movie Maker" until now for us to know. :(

The disable .bat will not harm anyone's computer. If one doesn't like what it does, then the enable .bat will undo it to go back to defaults.

Personally, I absolutely HATE Windows Live Photo Gallery. I have posted elsewhere with my battle with it. I had a great programme from 2004 - Microsoft Photo Premium with Ms PictureIt! Library. It catalogued all my pics superbly and the editing tools were just what I needed. After I installed Windows Live Essentials, the Photo Gallery corrupted my pics. Eventually I was able to save them to a USB stick, but I could never install Photo Premium again and get it to work. I uninstalled Live Essentials completely and installed Google Picasa, which catalogued all my photos. RESULT!
