How do i select best config to upgrade my desktop

Hello All ,

I am planning to upgrade my desktop.
Ill brief about my present config and what im looking for::

Present Config :
Processor and board
AMD athlon 7750 dual core
ASUS M2N68 - AM se2

Ram :: 4 GB DDR2 transcend 800MHZ x 2

Geforce 8600GT 1GB

Segate Baracuda 7200 512GB x 2


Problem started after i upgrade my RAM to Ram :: 4 GB DDR2 transcend 800MHZ x 2

One of my Hard drive is not detected(Even in Bios)

Any suggestions to fix this issue would be appreciated .


The reason im upgrading my desktop is to install VM ware and practice on setting up server an troubleshooting and little Gaming.

After several inputs i have figured out the below config::

or 97 r2 usb 3

PSU : Coolmaster true 450
(i wanted to go for 550 or 630 but dealer said this would be sufficient)

Cooler:: Dealer said it would not be necessary
but i was thinking about :: coolermaster hyper 212 evo

vga :: r7240 OR r7250 (2gb)
I WAS THINKING ABOUT r hd 6670 or 7860 , but due to high price i had to select the above ones.

RAM :: 2 x 8GB either 1333MHZ or 1600MHZ (Vengence)

I am planning to retain the Same Hard drives.

My budget is limited , so if you could please provide your opinion .

First choice was INtel , but they are heavily priced compared to AMD.

A couple of comments. Make sure the PSU you select is 80 PLUS certified to ensure at least an 82% "flat" efficiency rating across "all" realistic loads. I prefer Corsair, Seasonic, and Antec PSUs, but understand achieving a high, flat efficiency requires quality design, quality parts, and quality construction - regardless the brand name stamped on the case. But do NOT pick out your PSU until after you have selected all your other components and you have determined their power needs.

You don't need an aftermarket cooler. Contrary to what many may tell you, OEM coolers are more than adequate to provide sufficient cooling for the CPU they came with, even with mild to moderate overclocking. Plus, if the CPU you buy comes packaged with an OEM cooler, using an aftermarket cooler voids the warranty.

Remember, it is the case's responsibility to provide a sufficient supply of cool in flowing through the case. The CPU fan only needs to toss the CPU's heat into that flow. If a CPU is getting too hot, you should look at adding more case cooling so the CPU fan is not blowing hot air onto the CPU's heatsink.

The CPU is just one component in your computer. Once you factor in the costs of the motherboard, case, power supply, graphics, RAM, monitor, keyboard, mouse, OS license, and speakers, the difference in costs between AMD and Intel becomes almost negligible.

Also, just about all motherboard makers provide QVLs - qualified vendors lists - of compatible RAM and CPUs for each board on the board's website. Make sure you select a listed CPU. For RAM, there are too many makers and models for board makers to test them all so you don't have to buy listed RAM, but you do need to buy RAM with the same specs as listed RAM.

I don't see an operating system listed for you new computer. A common mistake many users make is they assume they can use their old Windows license on a new computer or when upgrading their motherboards. Understand only a "boxed" full Retail license can be transferred to a new computer (or upgraded motherboard). It is illegal to use an OEM license that came with or was purchased for one computer on another computer. A disk “branded” with a computer maker’s brand name, or is labeled with “OEM/System Builder”, “Upgrade”, “Academic Edition”, or "For Distribution with a new PC only", is not transferable to a new PC (or upgraded motherboard) under any circumstances. These OEM licenses are inextricably tied to the "original equipment", and an "upgraded" motherboard is considered a new computer, for licensing purposes - and this is all in the EULAs we agree to abide by when we first use our OEM software, making it a binding, legal agreement. So if that is the case, I recommend 64-bit Windows 8 or one of the many free Linux alternatives. Just ensure it is 64-bit since you have selected more than 4Gb of RAM.
