How do I specify the jpeg compression ration when setting an attribute

Hi Bernard
I think Madeira for the winter would suit me best!
Back to the problem.
I don't think that this can be a general Win 7 problem as you are the only person it is happening to. You have become unique for all the wrong reasons.
Your last paragraph gives what I would expect. I have just opened a 6.32Meg jpeg in WE and filled in all the details with quite lengthy text and on saving it has increased the file size to 6.33Meg. That's exactly what one would expect.
Tomorrow I am going to do an in depth search on this problem to see what I come up with
Will report back soonest

Just one last thought before I shut down for today. Can you open one of the drastically reduced jpegs in Elements and see if the size goes up? I know it shouldn't but I am clutching at a tiny straw here of a distant memory of a similar problem a year or so ago!

Even Maderia may not be that good - I was speaking with someone in Florida on Thursday and they said it was only 47 F there - my cousin in NY (Long Island, not up state) says the snow by the side of the road outside her house is now higher than her!! Maybe its not that bad here after all.

I agree with you on the sizes and the jpeg compression, and that, on the basis of a small sample, it seems I'm alone in this. I've just posted a question in the Microsoft Answers forums to see if I can get any clues from a slightly different audience and I'll post back here if I get anything.

Thanks for your interest.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you were asking but here goes.

I took a file size 1733 KB, opened it in Elements and changed 1 pixel and saved at maximum file size. The size went up to 3456 KB, which I think is quite a bit lower than the original jpeg from Vuescan although I cannot be certain about this since I do not have a record of the original jpeg file size. I then went back to Explorer and changed one letter in one of the attributes and saved again - the file size went down to 1734 KB. Given what I have been seeing I think this is what I would expect.

What were you thinking?

You had me a bit concerned but I couldn't repeat your issue.
I can only see Advanced attributes>Compress

I have the standard windows photo viewer associated with jpgs?
start>default programs>associate a file type......
(as opposed to Nikon ViewNx, Elements or other which may have a default jpg compression set)

(PS: My weather today 110F wouldn't you love that)

Might just just be possible there is a lot of empty space or null bytes in the JPEG image that is creating the large file sizes, when adding in or changing the metadata these null bytes are probably removed as they are not needed. So the real question is, do the images that under go this process look different in any way?

Just so it is clear, Windows will not alter the actual image outside of editing the metadata contained within. Well maybe if you count null bytes.

the use of the word 'attributes' is misleading.

if you click on a jpg in explorer, you'll see info at the bottom of the window, where the status bar used to be. you can click on the tags, title, comments etc and add your own data.

although not all of my jpgs display the 'authors' and 'comments' fields.
