I have got a bad situation. My friend purchased a new hp elite book 8440p about a year ago with windows 7 installed. He was recently killed in a flying accident and his wife has given me some of his stuff. Among that stuff was this laptop that she nor I could access since it was locked. I would basically like to know how to start this computer over as if it were new and return it to her. I know there isn't anything she needs off it as it was his unit he used while tuning cars. Is there a way for me to start this unit over like new or are we holding a useless unit. Please keep in mind I am not real computer savvy so please be gentle.

Thanks for the help.

Jeremy

Hello Jeremy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. :(

You could use the tutorial below to do a clean install on the laptop. You'll need to have the product key on the bottom or under the battery on the laptop.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

EDIT:
VK beat me to it.

Thank you!! I have to say most people do not pass away doing what they love. The only thing he loved more than flying was spending time with his family. I will try this tomorrow and let y'all know how it goes.

Thanks again.

LOL!!! I haven't started yet. I was just reading through them. I will try it tomorrow after I get home while the kids are still at summer camp. It's impossible to do this when you have a 6yo and 2yo going " daddy, daddy, daddy"

Most of the steps pertain to how to back up everything in advance so you dont' forget anything. This is so there are no unpleasant surprises later. In your case however you don't need to do these so after reading over these steps for background you can skip to the step to Boot the installer and start the install.

Be sure to delete all partitions and create a New one for install as shown in Step 7 of Clean Install Windows 7 which should be your illustrated install guide.

Look on the COA sticker on bottom of PC to see what version it shipped with then download from tutorial Step 1. If its Starter or Basic, download 32 bit Home Premium English SP1 with Media Refresh, unlock all versions by running the eicfg removal tool on the downloaded ISO, then burn to DVD or write to flash stick using the tool in Step 2. You'll get a menu to select the licensed version.

Follow the steps in the tutorial as they pertain the drivers. Go to the HP Support Downloads webpage at HP EliteBook 8440p Notebook PC*-* Download drivers and software - specify product name - HP Business Support Center to download the wireless driver to a stick or CD so you can install it if the Win7 installer doesn't provide it. This way you can get online quickly to do your updates which is the first thing to do after install.

Win7 is a driver-complete OS in the installer and quickly updates your drivers when you get online after install and run all rounds of Important and Optional Windows Updates, after enabling Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware (Step 3).

I would only import drivers still missing in Device Manager after all Updates are done, or if you still have the place-holder Standard VGA display driver. Don't change out drivers unless performance dictates doing this.

What do you mean by "partitions"?

edit: never mind I found it.

What do you mean by "partitions"?

I linked a step-by-step illustrated tutorial for the actual Clean Install Windows 7 functions, which in Step 7 shows how to delete the partitions installed at factory which now are useless without the ability to sign in. Deleting them gives you a cleaner install as well.

Moreover the install outlined in the Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 tutorial you read and should also follow will assure a vastly superior install to the Win7 which comes pre-installed, so be sure to stick with the tools and methods given and ask back any other questions you have about them.
