Ok I picked up an upgrade from home to pro package from Staples but there's no cd in it. How do I upgrade from my RC W7 then? Just use the installer disc made after downloading the RC version?

What does it say exactly on the package?

It sounds like an Anytime Upgrade which is just a key inserted during the Anytime Upgrade process of unlocking versions.

But I seriously doubt Anytime will work on RC, which is a buggy beta.

What you can try is downloading the RTM, unlocking all versions by removing the ei.cfg file from Sources, then recompiling into ISO to burn: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/32055-bootable-iso-create-installation-files.htm

Now boot from the DVD, choose your paid version, then Custom install to use Advanced drive tools to format before installing over the RC.

The installer will see the prior OS version which should allow insertion of the Upgrade key if it is going to work as a normal Upgrade.

However be aware that under the EULA you need a qualifying XP/Vista on hand to use an Upgrade key, although it doesn't need to be installed.

Thanks for all the info! I was under the impression that if I got the "upgrade anytime from home to pro" DISC I could upgrade my Build7100 Windows 7...but now I see the "anytime upgrade" is just the Serial number. I hope I can return to Staples...I took the shrink wrap off but didn't break the seal on the package.

Well I do have a Vista Ultimate 32 & 64 Disc set.

EDIT: That link you provide just takes me to the home page...is the thread gone?

You actually did not buy the Upgrade version of Win7, you bought the Anytime Upgrade version which does not install but just unlocks features.

You can still use the Upgrade version which is quite a bit cheaper than full retail, as long as you have a qualifying XP/Vista on hand.

Otherwise then, yes, you'll need full retail.

thanks. I posted a link to amazon on here showing the "anytime" upgrade and someone replied back saying I could use that to upgrade my RC version, so that's why I got it...shoulda researched better.

Having Vista on hand...is that just having a genuine serial number? Cuz I'm running Build 7100 of W7 as my main OS...i gave my Vista away to my sister so she could put it on her laptop.

Notebook review site has downloadable box files which can be compiled into IS0: LEGAL Windows 7 Download Links (Just like Vista before!!!)

Be extremely cautious downloading from the internet.

Anything downloaded should first have files rightclick scanned by (updated) Spybot S&D and your AV.

ok..REALLY the last question now...so which ever method I go with on that site, i'm not sure if you'd even know, but would I just install the PROFESSIONAL one and enter the upgrade key I bought to make it genuine? I'm thinking that would work? Or do I install the HOME PREMIUM trial since I don't have a HP key and then see if I can upgrade that to Professional and enter in my serial?

I'm a lil confused by which I should do.

The only sure thing I can advise is to take the Anytime Upgrade back to the store and exchange it for a regular Upgrade version of your choice.

They should accept its return if it is not opened since they sold you the wrong type of Upgrade.

If you have a Vista license on that machine then you qualify for the Upgrade.

Boot from the DVD, it will scan the HD, see the RC to allow you to insert the Upgrade key before formatting the HD. It only looks for an OS.

If not, you will need to use the popular workaround to install without an OS: http://community.winsupersite.com/b...-windows-7-with-upgrade-media-the-answer.aspx

Thanks for all the help gregrocker...appreciate it. Will give it a try!
