How is the Photoshop CS4 performance in W7

Hello!, I'm planning to move to 64bits because my needs for more RAM... Could you tell me how is the performance of photoshop CS4 under W7 compared to Windows XP?...
My system is a i7 920 + 3gb of ram (I will upgrade to 6 Gb)

Hi and welcome to seven forums

With 6gigs and 64 bit it runs better than in XP. While im no PS expert, I find it to be snappier than xp

It's in one word excellent.

Cannot compare to other OS's though, I only ran it at Win7 64bit.

Moving to 6gb might not make it faster, but you could open bigger and/or more photos, especially if you plan to edit RAW files.

If you have a good graphicscard you can enabled hardware, but to be honest I didn't notice any difference, and even found it to be a bit unstable with it enabled.

If you still have to buy Photoshop, I would go for the 64bit version, to profit most from your 64bit OS.

The 64Bit version of Photoshop CS4 took approximately 2.1 seconds to start up on my E6600 with 8GB DDR2. Slightly less than that on my new Q9550, but then I need to do a fresh install to RTM anyway, so that probably explains why it hasn't speeded up as much as I expected.

My CS4 Master Collection did a system profile at install, and then installed both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Photoshop.

I need more ram because it's RAW from a 21 Mpx camera (120 MB of tiff file), so memory hungry, So 3 Gb of memory is not enough...

Besides that, PS CS4 is a memory eater beast...

The startup time of a program is elementary, especially when we are talking in terms of 2 or 3 seconds.

The important aspect of a photo editor's performance, is how fast it loads your batch of pictures, how fast it calculates your filters and effects and such, and how many layers you can apply before it becomes sluggish.


Personally, I haven't reached any limit yet with CS4 64bit, and I am kind of a power user when it comes to editing.

Upgrade to the 6 gigs asap. I'm running the same setup i7 920 with 3 gigs, i get this thing stuttering when i get to my regular workload.

I work with 300-800 meg psds all day.

Running x64 with two gigs of RAM and an average GPU. Photoshop x64 running smoothly and without problems.

The only problem I see with x64 version of CS4 is that you wont be able to use any 3rd party plugins, bcoz there no or only few x64 plugin so you will be forced to use the 32bit version only most of the time.

I guess it all depends on what you are doing with PS. I can imagine that you don't need a super computer to work on any consumer-cam jpeg files.
I was trying to create a panorama picture the other day, trying to stitch together 33 raw files. Well, let's just say it crashed. But since one try took 15 min. to crash, I didn't bother to give it another try. I just made 3 pano's and then stitched them together to make my final piece. (the end result was crappy though because of user error )

Anyways, when comparing it to vista, I don't think the changes are really that dramatic. But when you are saying you will be upgrading from 3 to 6 GB, I would say why didn't you already? And maybe even better yet, if you are doing crazy stuff with your 21 mpx (1ds3? or 5dmII?) I would say, Try to sell the 3*1gb's and get two 6gb tipple channel sets.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Some plugins like those from Imagenomic are indeed 64-capable, but others will work only in 32-bit.

Depending on what you're doing, you may still find yourself using 32-bit. But additional RAM and an i7, etc., don't exactly hurt regardless of version, and Windows 7 itself is fine.

I have only found one problem using CS4 on Windows 7. When I open a raw image in ACR I find the straighten tool doesn't work right. Normally when using it you will see a series of dashed lines indicating where your using the tool. With 7 I don't see any of these dash markings.

Works fine with XP for some reason.

I'm not sure if some of the later builds of seven have worked this issue out. I'm still using 7100.

Photoshop CS4 and CS4 in general has an awesome set of features, but is badly bloated. There is too much going on in the background and as the creative suite has grown over different versions, it has finally caused a performance hit. As far as Windows 7 and Photoshop CS4, I see little or no difference between Windows 7 and 64 bit XP as far as performance. I've actually gotten dramatically snappier performance with large image files when using a hacked version of Photoshop that had the bloat removed, even though it was only 32 bit. Kind of disapointing really, but overall you should be pleased with 64 bit Photoshop on Windows 7.
