No, I don't own any toys that need a brick-scroll OS. No tablets and no touch-phones (I reiterate: toys). I learned my lesson with my brief encounter of Vista to stay away from newer OS's until they've been out for a couple years too. I also very seriously dislike progress for progress' sake, what I believe Windows 8 to be (just like Vista also was). I see absolutely no need to switch from 7 because it has given me absolutely 0 issues. Though, I think 7 could use a little trimming down on resources but other than that (slight nitpick), it is still kicking ass and taking names. It's XP on steroids. Perfection.

Also, I believe Windows 8 to be a little too reminiscent of MAC. I also hate MAC... first computer we had was one of those and it was a veritable nightmare to navigate and use for me (despite that MAC OS being modeled after Windows 98). Same thing I feel that these new brick-touch OS types are...

haven't actually tried it yet! i have it downloaded but not had the time to install and play about with it.

i guess a lot depends on how much it's going to cost as well...has pricing been announced yet? hopefully there will be cheap pre-order offers nearer release date, as there have been in the past.

That would be good, it's how I got Windows 7, I've never regretted buying it and if they do do an offer I will buy Windows 8.
I just love technology and trying out new gadgets.

Only 5 months ago I said this about Metro:
Installed it on a laptop at work. Hate the metro interface.
I hate Metro from the bottom of my heart. Nuff said

Then when Consumer Preview was released I started to think how I bashed those conservative "I hate change, give my XP back" geeks back when Seven was published. How I, among other geeks including some quite senior members of our own Seven Forums openly showed our contempt when some other geeks where only complaining, asking how Microsoft can be so stupid they replace XP with this totally different OS.

Let's be honest, some members were even banned basically because they voiced their negative opinion about Seven too loud and aggressively.

What has changed? An OS will be replaced with quite different one. No, wait. It has not changed from those days, it's the same story now. As with XP and Seven, also today with Seven and Eight the basic functions of the former can be found on the latter. As Eight looks at the moment, it is not so different when you think of it. OK, Start Menu is quite different and Metro totally new but you already have tools on interweb to get back the former and get rid of the latter.

After testing, searching, digging and reading almost everything about Eight I have found, I have grown to like it. Flexible and innovative Metro let's me pimp my Start screen as I wish, with direct access to my mail, media and friends. With a six button scroll mouse I can do wonders with just a few clicks. My rigs are synced, settings transferred without none whatsoever input from my side. Powerful Hyper-V takes now care of my virtualization needs, allowing me to install a virtual machine only once and then use it from any of my computers.

I share the opinion that the server version should be more traditional, that Metro GUI does not suit server. That being said, I like almost everything else on Eight, using Consumer Preview now as my main OS on all but one rig where I still have dual boot 7/8 system.

As older members already know, I am an egocentric vain narcissistic man, loving to quote myself ;), so here's something I posted a few days ago as response to This will be Microsofts biggest ever flop, far bigger than Vista on The Eight Forums:

Just my 2 cents:

I'm reading all these complaints about how difficult it is to find something, or how something works on Windows 8 CP. "I am an experienced Windows veteran since version XXX and I can not find this and can not do that", that seems to be a common nominator.

OK. I am an experienced Windows user, since absolute beginning of Windows. When I first saw Win 8 CP it was clear it is so different than previous versions that even experienced users might need to consult manuals and other written instructions.

I did so. And now I have absolutely no problems to navigate deeper and deeper on Win 8 CP, find what I need. The point is we should forget now the fact we are "experts" and start instead reading manuals. I know it's cool to brag that "only n00bs read manuals, I do not need them for I am a pro", but it's wrong attitude.

Control Panel cannot be found:BS! Can not hibernate: BS! Can not change this or that: BS!

Stop complaining. Read.

- Windows 8 Consumer Preview
- Windows 8 Consumer Preview Guide (pdf)

Remembering how aggressively I behaved and responded here not three years ago when XP lovers criticized "my beloved Seven", I promise this time not to judge if you decide to stay on Seven or wait the Nine. However, I would like to recommend it and ask you to give it a change, to try, to understand that world and everything on it changes. Maybe time is now right to make these fundamental changes to our way to think how an OS should be, feel and look.

I have always been a Microsoft fan boy and do not shame it. I am happy they will give us this magnificent new OS; after my initial negative reaction I was afraid I would have to move over to Mac :)

Very sincerely, a happy Eight user.

Kari

+1, Very well said Kari.

After many years of having a company owned laptop and restricted OS and apps, never upgraded the OS until well after SP1, I was always curious and got the new OS on my new computers.
Now I prefer to get new OS soon as I can, explore and learn about it, and have never been disappointed with any new OS enough to downgrade.

Same with Win8, first impression was not the best but, after digging deeper I found that I really like it, including Metro once you customize it to your preference, it has many improvements over Win7.

Give it more than a cursory glance, make it your own OS.
Truly believe 80% of the current naysayers will prefer it over any other OS. Most of the rest will come around within a year ;)

Hi there
Not sure about the "Metro" thingy -- but otherwise very favourable -- very fast boot up and shutdown too.

Still no "Windows Classic games" like spider solitaire etc yet but I'm sure they will be "ported" from W7 if necessary.

Given the same stage of developent that W7 was in at "beta stage" I'm amazed at how stable W8 is -- no horrible crashes etc and it runs everything I've thrown at it without problem.

I like the Windows to go feature as well -- running a REAL copy of Windows from a USB stick / external drive -- and I mean a REAL Windows that treats the boot USB stick / Usb drive as your Windows C: drive (read and write) where you can access all your other network / local resources just like as if you are running from an INTERNAL HDD -- this is a REAL windows OS --not an "installation", "Live CD type of OS" or a Bartpe type of solution. You can install applications etc just like you do with windows.

If you don't feel like dual booting or creating a VM machine why not try this out on a 16 GB USB stick !!.

Here's the link from the W8 Forums.

Have fun and enjoy.

Cheers

Unless there's some absolute reason to it won't be anytime soon.

Why the sudden eventual release of a new version of Windows anyway?

Is Microsoft putting a short lifespan on Win7 or is it my imagination? I have not came across a bit of info about SP2. I'm also taking it that IE10 is going to be a Win8 exclusive.

The MS average, and target, OS release timing is 3 years.
There were some issues after XP that caused that timeframe to be so long, it is an exception to the rule.

This is a good release sequence, they need to keep up with hardware improvements as well as software changes.
Not everyone wants or needs to get every new release, but some like to be in the discovery phase in the beginning.

i've now been playing with it (or rather poking it with a stick) for a couple of weeks - it's not really my cup of tea.

i don't think i'll be upgrading even if it was free (unless they make some back-tracking changes before release). the new task manager and file-copy dialogue are nice, but maybe i'm getting too old and neophobic to appreciate metro and charms. (@#%&ing charms - who thought that one up?)

but then again i suppose i'll have to get a copy so i can deal with my clients' and friends' problems when they buy a new pc with 8 pre-installed.

if any mod is reading this, can i change my vote from 'not made mind up' to 'no'?

Since it looks like it's geared mostly towards touch pads, I'll stay with 7 unless they make some improvement, like add the option to set it up for desktop use. I hope they will, being that 7 offered to option to set it up as "classic" windows.

I'm still on the fence - but I'm really starting to find the metro side of things far more counter productive than the so called 'work flow improvement' it's being touted as. The apps themselves, while 'previews' aren't impressive and 98% of them are uninstalled/unused.

My biggest gripe isn't so much the loss of the start orb/menu, but the loss of the 'desktop search' function in the start menu. Being thrown back to Metro every time for an app search is becoming a real PITA.

My personal usage consists of 4 tiers of accessibility:

  1. Very frequently accessed apps like browsers, explorer etc. They get pinned to the taskbar. But I don't like clutter so I don't want a taskbar full of pinned apps. I only have 4 or five pinned at most.
  2. The next tier is pinning slightly less frequent apps to to the start menu. This is bloody handy.
  3. I also have folders on the desktop for some even lesser frequented apps/games that contain shortcuts. Metro idea without redundant clicks.
  4. For non-shortcut/pinned apps I use the start menu search to access functions/apps. This last tier of accessibility is the one that I'm missing the most with Metro.

I got nothing pinned, no icons on desktop either; I've come to depend almost entirely on the Win7 start menu search to launch practically everything - I just hit <win> then type the first few letters of the application's name, hit enter - wa-la, it's launched. <Win> + E gets me an explorer window.

Having to use the mouse again to launch programs is going to really cramp my style.
