How much time to you spend looking at your desktop?

I'm curious as to why some people go to great extremes to customize their desktops? I spend very little time, if any, looking at the desktop. I usually have a number of apps open and never go to the desktop. Because I use the desktop so little, I also never use Aero Peek and don't really bother with desktop gadgets.

Do others spend a lot of time on the desktop when they use their computer?

i dont even have any icons on my desktop so i baraly even look at it. althog when im not using or go away from the pc i like to minimize evrything.

Since I have a dual monitor setup, I like to have a picture that is nice to look at. I have a free monitor maybe 30-40% of the time.

Out of all my 6 screens I only ever see the desktop when the PC first boots before I have chance to open all my stuff.

I have 3 screens with some gadgets on the right screen.
Left screen has my downloads and I work on the middle on.

I do have custom wallpapers that I cropped to fit my resolutions,
just don't have an image of the desktop only at the moment.

My desktop hasn't any icons on it. I've made some slide shows with wallies that I like, so when ever wall is changed, I'm staring in it for 5-6 seconds, and continue what I was doing.
Our admin has 6 screens wow! That's a looot of screens.

I have a dual monitor setup so I use the gadgets more than I look at my desktop, but I like to know there's a nice image there. Plus as others mentioned I like a nice desktop on my free monitor. It's just something to customize for the overall ambiance of my computer/room.

Makes editing a bit easier since the interface can be spread out and not cluttered on 1 screen.

No offense, but I think anything more than 2 monitors is overkill. Even with my dual-23" monitor setup, I find myself still using only one monitor. Hard to get into the habit of using the other monitor.

What do you use your PC for?

I need to monitor the posts being made on 3 forums, watch the servers, surf the net all while watching the news channel - that would be a little hard on two screens.

To say any amount of screens if overkill based on your person situation is just rubbish.

I use the Recycle Bin icon, a desktop clock, and as many cool desktop wallpapers in a slide show as I can find.

Not anymore. I still shoot video, but mainly I build/repair/upgrade computers, photograph golf tournaments, and do onsite printing with another photographer, he shoots the portraits and I'll print out the packages.
I also fix/upgrade sports cars as well.

To say any amount of screens if overkill based on your person situation is just rubbish.

While one might argue that 6 screens is a bit overkill....in your case the functionality and practicality of having this many screens is worth the price of admission. Sure, you could use fewer monitors...but you don't want to. Nothing wrong with that.
