How To Add Large Text To Picture

I want to add a short line of text to a picture that will be used as a thumbnail, but when I tried to do so in Paint, even though I used the largest font available (Lydian BT 72), it was not legible when the picture was reduced to thumbnail size. I'm sure that what I want can be done...but how?

Did you know you can set the font size manually in Paint? The drop down list only goes to 72 points. If you want bigger, or a size not listed, just click inside the size field and type the size you want.

In this screenshot the word "Hi" is 300 points, the word "there" 72 points i.e the maximum you can select from drop down list.

Thanks, I'll keep tinkering with it, but I'm attaching the thumbnail anyway. Not sure how it will size up on the forum.

EDIT: I forgot to provide the text, all that I want is simply two of this pic, with it labeled below the original photo and text, to say Box 1 of 2 on one, and box 2 of 2 on the other, in a dark blue, Making it bold enough to be readable when shrunk to ~ 7/16" x 1 3/8" (I suppose those measurements would vary depending on the monitor. Mine is 23" WS).

It's not square, so you know you'll lose some left and right, right? Or you could crop the top & bottom so it's 585*585. It all helps...

I just loaded it into the program that will use it, and it seems fine. The type is a bit larger than I had planned on, but at least it is easy to read. Have you got another for the second thumbnail?

Hmm, for some reason that's not going to work, because even though it appeared properly in the thumbnail section, it didn't on the details window. That's surprising, because it also disappeared on the box set images which are loaded separately from those in the Display/Thumbnail sections. At first, I thought it might be due to the fact that the image might be too large, but in actuality it is smaller in the configuration window, where the image is loaded into, than it does when I directly acquire it from a scan.

What about as jpg? Good for you? I'm not entirely sure what your saying about details window - can you clarify?

I apologize for the trouble you have taken on my part, but I kept tinkering and got what I needed. I think that the reason I failed before was because I worked from too large of an image, and when I reduced that, the text almost disappeared. This time I worked from a much smaller image I put on the desktop, and the text appeared even larger than it was on the image that I first attempted. In any case, I do appreciate your effort. Thanks.

There are a number of other Thumbnails that I would like to number, but even though I could use one font style, I would need a variety of colors. The ones that I have seen already part of some of the thumbnails are outlined, with the interior being a lighter shade of color than the boundary. This would be good to make the numbers appear as being part of the original design, rather than something added as an afterthought. I know that there are a lot of free fonts available, but not knowing a particular name to look for, finding the right one would probably take an eternity. I'm hoping that someone can save me some time, and provide a name or a link?

There are lots of ways to do what you want. No need to search for and download specific fonts. Its quite straight foward to create an outline font from any of the fonts you have on your system. Most half decent photo editors will do his even the freebies. Do you have any photo editors installed, if not Picasa will do what you want. You can download from here:

and i will be happy to help you create the fonts you want in whatever color combinations you choose.

Photo Editor...I'm sure sure that they qualify under that definition, but I have Windows Live Photo Gallery and Ashampoo Photo Commander 7 installed, and a couple of others in the archive, but for common ground, I will go ahead and download Picasa. How intuitive is it? This is another of the many things that I haven't dealt with before.

Fairly straightforward. It is often packaged with digital cameras so it is aimed at the novice level really but even so with a bit of imagination you can do lots!

Picasa's great for integration with Picasaweb - online storage / distribution of your photos, too... Solves the problem of emailing lots of photos to lots of people... upload your photos, mark them either public, only with link or private then send people you want to have acces to them the link.

Just downloaded trial version Of Ashampoo 7 and as far as I can see you cannot create outline fonts with this program, so Picasa is looking a good choice. Let us know when you are up and running with Picasa!

Am off out for a while so offer this as a filler.
With Picasa open right click on an image in the thumbnail window or click File, Open and navigate to your image of choice. In the pane on the left there are three tags, "Basic Fixes, Tuning, Effects. Click on Basic Fixes. Then in the third row down click on "Text". Then you will see "Type anywhere to add text" in your image. Type any word/s. Now set the font and size, suggest Ariel, size 48. In the line of icons circled in red on the screenshot:


Click on either of the two cicles and that will open a color chart choose any color and that will reflect in the text either the fill or the outline. Click the other circle and that will effect the the fill or the outline. You can adjust the hickness of the line by the slider bar on the right. You can also alter the transparency of the colors by the slider bar at the bottom. The choice of Bold, Italic etc is at the top. When you are happy with the result click "Apply" at the bottom and job done!

I don't think that Picasa is going to work...at least not with a particular group of images, because when I noticed that those that I have in a thumbnail folder, which I downloaded from Google Images were missing, I had Picasa scan that folder. The thumbs then appeared in Picasa, but had a red and white crossed circle at the bottom of them, and the various functions of Picasa's in the dropdown menu's were grayed out. I have no idea of how these images differ from the rest that I have, but obviously they do.

Can you attach the full-size version of your DVD artwork as a zipped folder so that we can work with it without it being resized before we get it?
