I have most of a win7 64 bit/xp(3) network set up but the xp system can't access files on the win7 system.

Here's what works and what doesn't and what I've set up.

In Win 7, the xp files show in the computer/network window and are accessible from there. However, the xp files cannot be mapped. the control panel/network map shows an icon and name of the xp system and says "the following discovered devices cannot be placed in the map." no explanation is given.

In the xp system, the win 7 files show in network places but when i click them, an access denied message appears.

the win 7 system name is W520, the xp system name is XP
the work group for both is named workgroup

to give the xp permission to access the win 7 files, in the advanced sharing window, i tried to put in the location of the xp workgroup like this, but it wouldn't accept it: \\xp\workgroup. only W520 appears as a location.

i've already given permission for "everybody" to access the win 7 files, but i suspect that is everybody at the w520 location only.

how can i add the xp system to advanced sharing section and how can i get it mapped?

and is there anything i haven't asked that i should do?

thanks for any help.

I fail to see how a security setting would keep an XP machine from showing up on the Win7 network map.
That depends on Link Layer Topology Discovery.

The download link in that KB article will get you v5, which will fix XP SP2.
MS forgot to put it in the service pack rollup, though, so you have to request the hotfix to get v6, which will install on SP3.
