The only thing I can come up with is that I have run JunctionBox in the past and it restores default junctions naming that particular one "Recent"

Thanks everyone for all of your efforts.
Should I not have made it clear, though I thought I had, I do, yes I do, want the list. What I want is to control the amount, (the number of items), stored in memory. In other words not the amount/number showing on the list, but also what is not showing (hence me saying in memory). The amount showing I know is controllable. And as you have shown we can choose '0', to show nothing, if we uncheck the box.
What I had mentioned is that if you delete one, another takes its place, and if you delete that one yet another takes its place, etc. etc. What this tells you is that you see a certain amount (based on your choice) but the actual list is actually bigger--what you don't see. I had assumed that if this wasn't doable somewhere, on the 'frontlines' so to speak, then it would be controllable via the registry

Okay so I found a way to prevent certain programs and items from creating jumplists but it's a bit complicated.

Based on the information here:

windows 7 - Disable Recent Items in Jump Lists for Certain Programs - Super User

It's possible to identify applications that created a jumplist entry and block them.



You get a list of text files to inspect. Then follow the instructions in the link above.

The only other way I know of at the moment is to pin items to keep and clear the rest using Ccleaner or similar. If some items are not cleared you'd need to edit the Ccleaner winapp2.ini file to include anything that's missed.

I believe that Ccleaner set at Default clears jump list.

It's easy to do with just a couple of ticks. Problem solved.
I run Ccleaner at the Default settings before every shut down. Been doing it for years in that fashion. It's been solving a problem I didn't even know I had.

Indeed but it's still not entirely clear which jumplist or jumplists are problematic!

Since the OP cited privacy, I would say that the OP would be interested in limiting the list of items that flows into any jumplist as items are manually deleted.

Setting NTFS folder level permissions via ICACLS might be able to prevent the list of extra items in the first place. Then the jumplists would be limited to only the items shown. This is not what the OP asked for, but it might be acceptable and requires no ongoing labor.

If the OP is concerned about privacy, then the WebCache folder might be worth researching. It too tracks some files that are opened.

I did say the list which pops up on a given program on the taskbar.
Attached are 2 photos--a before and after. In both images if you count the list you'll see an equal amount of files--13. On the 1st list the last title is, "Comodo.rtf", on the 2nd image the last file is,"My Photoshop CS6Notes.docx

Okay I don't have MS Office on my home based machine but I believe that it's possible to limit the recent file list in Word options.

I think finding the correct settings depends upon the version of MS Office.

I can't check settings until I use my work based machine that has MS Office installed. Hopefully limiting that list also cuts down on the mumber of items in the taskbar list.

@UserNameIssues. Regarding webcachev01.dat and the like. It's not something that a casual user would be able to view without effort but I do clear it on a regular basis along with $UsnJrnl, shellbags and quite a few other locations where I have privacy concerns!

Thanks Callender. I will try what you suggest. Please note though, that Word was just an example. The same goes for not only all Office apps, but also all Adobe apps, your media player, Explorer, your Browser and just about anything that you place on the task bar. Try it yourself and you'll see what I mean.

Okay I see what you mean but as far as I can work out there isn't a way to limit lists but they can be cleared. Using my work machine currently but setup is entirely different as users desktops are remote and hosted on a server.

Once again I thank you all. The problem is I do not want to clear everything. Clearing everything does more than just clear the list there it clears everything in other places as well. Anyhow, thanks

Okay back home on my home based machine. The best I can come up with - it seems to be application specific and I can pin items in the list and keep them but clear the rest. Here's an example. EMEditor (similar app to notepad) pinned to taskbar recent items list:

One item pinned and two items in recent.

Ran Ccleaner. Pinned item was kept. Recent items were cleared.

Also right clicking the tray icon gives customise options but you need to identify the correct menu.



If Ccleaner doesn't have application specific rules in it's winapp2.ini file then you need to either create them based on application specific research or download a new winapp2.ini file with more built in cleaners than the standard winapp2.ini file that is supplied with Cccleaner.

So bottom line is keep pinned items that you need and discard the rest of the entries in recent files by running Ccleaner.

Maybe other ideas from other members will be posted.

No need for CCleaner? When you only uncheck 2nd option, jumplists are gone, pinned items stay and Start Menu recent programs stay also.

Wow well done Callender. Unfortunately pinned items are not needed. This is a recent file list, hence I only care about what I used recently--an article I am working on now will not be of importance 2 months from now. A film I didn't finish seeing will only be needed once--after having been seen the shortcut can go. That is why it bothers me that if I delete this short cut I then get a previous older one, which is even more useless.

[Side note: Points-of-view are interesting--what is the view, or of importance to one, may not be to another. I would have thought that such a thing, the problem I presented, would have been noticed and bothered everyone with a Windows OS. In my head, in my view, how could it not? ]

@Pintree. I see your point entirely but it seems that windows will add items to the list until it's cleared. The only way I can find to clear the list but keep recent items of interest is to pin those items before clearing the list. Once the list is cleared - old items do not reappear.

The professionals commenting there say that you cannot partially clear some items from the jump list. One option as UserNameIssues hinted at earlier is to prevent apps from creating jumplists but then there will be no application specific history at all. You might still get a recent intems list on the start menu.
