This is about the right side of the start menu where Control Panel, Administrative Tools, etc are. Not the All Programs menu.

I recently upgraded from XP and am annoyed that the Recent Items is mid way down as I frequently use that and it is kind of hidden in that long list. I'm looking for a way to move that to the top like it was on XP. I searched tutorials using "start menu" but couldn't find anything but perhaps that isn't the right term for this area. I figure there must be some place in the registry where these items are ordered.

thanks

I don't care about an XP menu, just used that as an example of the order. Easier access is all I'm going for.

Eyesight isn't the best so I find it hard to find the recent items. Well not hard but not as quick as it would be if recent was at the top or near it. If I can't find anyway to order it I guess I'll play with themes and such to see if I can make the list more readable.

I had briefly looked at the tutorial you linked to and it appears to just be about adding / removing those items which I knew I could do but had not done. So that prompted me to get rid of the music, pictures etc that I don't use. That will probably help a bit just by making the list a bit smaller.

Still hoping though that someone has found a way to order that list.

The latest Classic Shell has a "Windows 7" style, which gives you a very close implementation to the default Windows 7 menu, but with the added benefit to be very customizable. You can get any items in any order in the right side of the menu.

I assume your talking about 8.1? I don't think I can run that. This is a fairly old Dell laptop (Dell D820). It's going on eight years old and drivers seem to be getting a little scarce for win 7.

No, I am not talking about 8.1 in particular. Classic Shell supports all versions of Windows from 7 to 8.1.

Oops; Sorry

I didn't realize that classic shell was a 3rd party shell. I thought you were referring to the changes that 8.1 supposedly has to bring back start menu type stuff. I'll have to take a look at that.
