How to configure a Vista PC to join a W7 workgroup??

What then would be the proper way to configure a Vista laptop to join the workgroup created on the Windows 7 PC?

You don't. You configure the Win7 machine to join the Vista group.
If the Vista machine is working, leave it alone... work on the Win7 machine.

After setup

I've set up file sharing between a Vista Laptop and a Windows 7 Desktop but here's my problem.

The W7 desktop can see and access the Laptop's files but there is a problem with the Vista Laptop - it can only see the file folders on the Desktop PC BUT not access them.

I get a window that advises Windows cannot access\\Desktop\My Pictures.

When I click the diagnose the network problem button I receive a response, "My Pictures is available but the user account you are logged on with was denied access. What exactly is the user account in the context of this? I never was prompted to set a user account up??

Where do you think I might have made a mistake, and how can I resolve the issue???

You went to work on the Vista machine didn't you?

I hope you kept a record of what you changed over there... 'cause the best thing you can do at this point is put it all back.

On the win7 machine you need to do this...

See the thing is that an older computer cannot know the future so an older OS will not connect with a newer one. However the newer OS can know the past and, unless seriously braindead, should be able to backdate itself to connect with the older one.

My view is that you would want to join the Windows 7 workgroup from the Vista machine and not the other way around. You would in fact want to join the workgroup created on the Windows 7 machine by running the network set up wizard on the Vista machine. I've been saying it that way since day one and it's served me well. After that it should be just a matter of setting up the permissions correctly.
