How to Create My Own Folder Icons with Photoshop

I did a search on “folder icons” and various combinations there of, but the matches didn’t seem to answer my question.

Does anyone know if it's possible to create my own customized icon using Photoshop, Corel, etc. and place it in one of the following folders; so it can be used to customize the folder icon in Win7?

%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll or %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll

If so, how is it done? Thanks.

Yeah, you can do that,

Go to XN Resource Editor, download Xn resource editor and install it in your computer.

copy shell32.dll from system32 folder to your desktop, open it with xn resource editor, expand icon group and replace the generic icon (the first one) with your custom icon. Save it and paste the updated shell32.dll file to system32 folder. Restart and try to change a folder icon to yours customized.



But create a system restore point before doing that..

I thought I might download this to play around with but my browser gave me the following warning:

"This type of file can harm your computer."

Why? Anything I should know or am missing?

I can't imagine why. IcoFX doesn't contain any adware or spyware, so that can't be the reason. Here's a link to the CNET review, which is very positive. And if you search IcoFX out on Google, there's a host of good information on the software.

If you are using chrome, then you downloaded a .exe file. It tells me that all the time, including when I downloaded an executable from ASUS, my motherboard manufacturer.
