How to disable chkdsk?

Chkdsk is becoming extremely annoying
One day it does chkdsk for no reason at all
Then some day it does it again
How do you disable chkdsk?

You can do it by using a cmd prompt.

Go to Start and type cmd.

Right-click cmd and choose to run as administrator then type the following syntax:

chkntfs /x C: where C: is the drive in question and press Enter to run the command.

If you want to revert to the default setting run the command again without the letter x:

chkntfs / C:

There is always a reason for chkdsk to run. The problem with disabling it is you could have a corrupted file system and if chkdsk is not allowed to run then who knows what kind of problems you will run into.

Would be better to try to figure out why it's running.

How do you shutdown the computer?
Try running the hard drive manufacturers diagnostic, see if there is a problem with the drive.

BTW: That's a very nice computer!

As Ztruker mentioned. Rather than disabling it, you should try and figure out why it is running.

To expand on what seavixen32 said:

Start> In search box type cmd> Right click cmd.exe in results above and choose Run as administrator>Type

fsutil dirty query c:

Press enter. This will query the drive, and it may tell you that it is dirty.

Next, type


CHKNTFS /X c:

Press enter> The X tells Windows to NOT check that particular drive (c) on the next reboot> Manually reboot your computer, it should not do a Chkdsk and open Windows

Start> In search box type cmd> Right click cmd.exe in results above and choose Run as administrator>Type

Chkdsk /r c:. This will take you through a chkdsk scan, and hopefully clean the dirty bit

Backup your hard drive, to avoid problems. Then test it to be sure it is not ready to fail.
