How to get my godaddy account to act the same as gmail?

Ok I currently have a IMAP account with godaddy.

I would really like if it would work on all devices the same as my gmail account does?

you know, if I delete or send something on one, it does it to them all?

Instead of having to delete the same email 3 times & being able to keep track of it all?

I currently use my iPhone, Outlook 2007 & their email server all at random times, but I want them all synced up as one?

On the expensive side,
you could buy windows server, exchange server, and a physical server.
or you can have your gmail check all of your email accounts.
Link your outlook to your gmail.
and bam.
you check your gmail via iphone get all of your emails,
check your email through outlook and get all of your emails

I can tell you about Outlook and the same thing needs to be done to the others. == Go into Tools, Email Settings, More Settings and Advanced. You will see a check mark in "Leave on Server for x number of days". Uncheck that and when accessed by another program, it will not show up in Outlook. I am sure the other programs have the same type of setting somewhere.

I had a similar issue...although I just had the GoDaddy email package that includes only POP...not IMAP. I had this service for 6 or 7 years and finally got tired of paying for less than I can have for free elsewhere...so I moved my domain to Gmail...for free...and have not looked back. Well, actually, it isn't Gmail per se...it's Google for Domains.

The web-based client is essentially Gmail...and it is awesome. My email is now in synch...whether I delete/read it on my PC or on my phone...and it costs nothing.


There are many tutorials available online. This one is fairly exhaustive:

...but really, it is fairly simple...boiling down to just several steps:



1) Register at Google: Sign up for Google Apps


2) Use the follow-on instructions that google provides to prove that you own the domain (one way is to upload a file to your site that google then checks for)


3) Update your MX records at GoDaddy to inform GoDaddy that it no longer handles your mail (without transferring control of the domain). GoDaddy has instructions for updating your MX records to point toward Google: https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/google/gmail_login.asp

...or, alternatively, use this page at Google to automatically update your MX records at GoDaddy: Configuring Your MX Records: GoDaddy.com - Google Apps Help


4) Optionally create a CNAME record at GoDaddy so you can access your Google for Domains account (including email) with a URL based off of your domain - e.g., email.yourdomain.com http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=47610


5) Go back to GoDaddy, cancel your email package, and spend that $20 or $30 a year on something else.

Hmm. This sounds really interesting.

I am a big fan of google everything too.

I do on the other hand like godaddy for the most part.

As of right now I am able to have both my gmail account & outlook account on my iphone - will this google for domains name be able to be accessed like a gmail account on my iphone?

I am actually a big fan of outlook for a few different reasons - does this google for domains allow you to set it up with outlook for a real time computer based email client?

Google for Domains is just like Gmail...with additional domain features - e.g., you can create a number of users under your domain, you can control look and feel. It also includes support for a range of other Google apps (e.g., Google Docs, Google Sites, ...).

The email portion works just like Gmail in terms of the web-based client and the API that allows phone access with a native phone client. I have a Plam Pre and used the phone's native email client in the past to connect to my godddy account and a gmail account. The Google for Domains account configuration on my phone is the exact same as my old Gmail account. I also know folks using it with iPhones in the same manner.

Just like GoDaddy, Google for Domains supports POP and IMAP...so you can also use a fat client on your PC...like Outlook, Outlook Express, or Thunderbird, rather than the web-based client...but unlike GoDaddy, they do not charge extra for IMAP.

After switching, I have no regrets. I love being able to delete (or mark read) on either my phone or PC and have that status convey to the other device. The web-client smokes GoDaddy's web client. The only oddity is (just like gmail) you cannot sort your "folders" (e.g., inbox) by "column". Very odd...but I suppose that they feel that their search and filter capabilities are powerful enough that this capability is not needed.

I suggest giving it a shot. You can always switch back. The Google for Domains account is free...and changing your MX records is pretty easy. You can point them toward Google and leave your GoDaddy email running. If you don't like Google, you can always point them back toward GoDaddy.

If I switch everything over from godaddy to googledomain, I will lose all of my emails I have in my Outlook currently correct? Since its linked with the godaddy account?

If so, what can I do to transfer them over besides forwarding them all?

Well this could depend on what type of godaddy account you have? Windows or Linux. I have a cpanel host and use live mail to it (imap). But be carefull you don't select all the folders. having said that I don't know about godaddys interface with linux accounts.

GoDaddy supports POP3 access. Gmail (and Google for domains) supports retrieving email from another POP3 account. I moved my mail no problem. If you don't care about having it online, you can alternatively download all of your GoDaddy email with a local PC POP3 client (e.g., Thunderbird, Outlook Express). Either way, you don't need to lose the email.
