Solved How to install several instances of the same printer

Tried to install 4 instances of my Canon MX885 all in one.
This was easy in XP.
Not so in 7, I managed to make two under one MX885 header, no more.
Want I want is 4 different pics of my MX885 in "printers and devices" called MX885-fast, MX885-photo, MX885-medium and MX885-fax.
Fast as default.
It's not handy to open the printer details and wade through some screens to set the printing quality...

Anyone?

I am not quite sure of what you are wanting barend do you want icons on desktop to open each of those separately?

What do you have listed in Devices and Printers if you have the four as separate listings then you only need to right click on the device function and click create shortcut. it will then show up as same on the desktop.

Correct me if I have this wrong.

He wants 4 copies of his printer, each one with a different set of default parameters.

Sorry I have to plead ignorance on this one then as I don't know why berand wants separate pics. My printer a Canon MG 5200 is only just that - a printer scanner and card reader and I just pick the function I want from the one pic in Printers and Devices.

Again sorry mate but I am now just assuming you just need ultra quick access to a particular function. Hope someone can help out.


But just as a matter of pure curiosity just how did you do this in XP?? in case it crops up again.

If you print a text document in draft mode, what do you have to do to your printer settings?
If you want to print a text document in high quality mode, what do you have to do to your printer settings?
If you print a photo using photo paper, what do you have to do your printer settings?

If he makes 3 copies of the printer, each one with preset settings, then when he goes to print, he chooses the printer with the settings he will be using. This way he doesn't have to go into the printer preferences and choose the parameters each time he wants to print.

In XP, you could just make copies of the printers, and then you could rename them.
not sure how to do it in Win 7 though.

I see roughly a bit like having a click on for a different set of page setups (defaults)?

Yeah I don't see any way of doing this in 7 - would it be worth getting on technet and asking?

Hello barend ansd Zepher again
I posted this problem on the Microsoft community site and I got a rather abrupt answer form them - well I thought it abrupt - they said this was not a Windows 7 problem and referred it to being a Canon function. They posted this site back to me I don't know if this will be of any help but I suppose it was worth a try and maybe there is something in here barend you can use.

If it is no good sorry mate but I did have a good look round.

I'll have a scratch around in there and see if I can find anything, I suppose it could be a driver problem mate anyhow have a look and see if you can find something.

After removing the MX885 LAN printer, and reinstalling it, it's no longer found on the LAN when I try to add one more instance.
What I would like (and it worked fine in XP and -I believe- in W7 before SP1) is a separate instance each to address from, say, Word of the following situations:
- Just plain quick printing
- Printing to photo paper
- etcetera, each with approriate settings

This is using the W7 driver, lost the original cd, maybe it's driver related?

Yeah I can see what you are getting at but all I get with my all in one (no fax) are these two screens.

I must admit the other Microsoft siter was not helpful at all but perhaps if you can get your manual up it might just give you a hint .

Other than that my friend I think maybe 7 has not included the XP feature or if it has it is wll hidden.

It is strange though that it was ok up to SP1??

Actually before SP1 I used the cd driver, now on installing a fresh W7 I couldn't find the disc so I used the W7 included driver.
So it may very well be a driver issue after all, as I noted over the years that hardware drivers included with Windows were sometimes very different.
Will check next weekend again (and continue looking for that darned CD -LOL-).

Downloaded a different driver from the web mp68-win-mx880-1_0-ea24.exe which showed the functions in separate icons print & fax, and allowing me to add more instances of "printer" by just adding a new printer, LAN: now the MX880 shows up.

Mate you don't need that disk you just need to download the current and up to date driver/s form Canon Canon Global pick your country / area burrow down into support I can't read ?German so this is what I found on the UK site it takes a bit of rooting through the items but you will find the latest drivers mate. Good luck and let us know how you go.

Hum well whenever I have had Canon printers (nearly always) I just download the driver for that particular model then install. the download includes every function of that device . So I can only suppose the drivers over there must be on a different system - shame because that would have solved your problem in one hit.

Never mind if you have it sorted but it certainly shows up a flaw in their system of back up and support.

I know that certainly softwares use regional versions or variables for example Kaspersky I loaded a machine with the security suite here then shipped it to my brother in England where it (much to my annoyance) is not able to be activated and therefore used there. To my cynical mind it isa money making way of doing business:huh:
