Did you check this tutorial?

You need to have your computer switched on with the Windows DVD in the disc drive then click the Windows setup.exe file, as described in this tutorial.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

More to the point, what problems are you experiencing that makes you think you need to carry out a repair install?

Yes, from the Win7 desktop click Install Now on a Win7 Installation DVD with SP1, then Upgrade.

Do you plan to answer SeaVixen's question about what the problem is since you might not even need a Repair Install?

my computer shuts off when playing games. Is not a heating issue, that I know of.

replaced vid cards mobo everything anyways.

I do not understand and it confuses me.

You are saying I need to download a cd? I have the one the computer came with though, is this not good enough?

Work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 which work up to a Repair Install. You want to establish a clean boot, check the logs (especially Performance) to see if there are events around the time of the shutdowns, utilize the System Resources built in, test your hardware. Take all the time you need and ask back any questions to get them done correctly.

The Win7 DVD you have may be before Service Pack 1 came out so it cannot be used for a Repair Install. But I provided you with the Win7 installer ISO to burn a DVD which should work if that becomes necessary.

However running a Repair Install without working up to it through the Troubleshooting steps is jumping the gun.

Why are you trying to do a repair install ? If you want to do a clean install just drop your W7 dvd in and delete your partition and install W7. You will loose everything on that partition so back it up b4 you start.

I looked at the event viewer and it said something about eh kernel losing power

so im hoping reinstalling the os will give it more power.

I forget exactly the error since I forget how i saw it in event viewer but one time I did know how to open it and when I did a day or so ago it said something about a kernel i think losing power.

Did you google the exact text of the error plus any identifying number to see how others have resolved it?

4. Study the Event Viewer>Custom>Admin view for repeat errors to google text and ID# to find out how others have resolved them.

5. Check also the Performance log on Advanced Tools page accessed by clicking your WEI score link at Computer>Properties. Check for cued issues at top of Tools page, Generate A System Health Report.
Look for issues cued in Action Center in bottom-right System Tray.

I get event ID 41, The System has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error vould be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

I did the generate health report and there are a few odd ones. I will google them

1. tv_configmgrerr43 device config shuts it down

most of the basic system checks failed hmmmm i dont know if reinstalling would fix any of this.

argh there is an unknown device in my windows device manager, everytime I uninstall it and do the scan for hardware changes it magically reinstallsas "unknown device". I have no idea what this device is or why it is there.

Also how am I supposed to install that iso I downloed to a usb? Do I just copy it over? What is MAstering ap v2 how do I get the right one for my hardware platform it says unsupported platform.

I am using windows 7 NOT windows xp and this install os to thumbdrive software only works on windows xp so why is it on the seven forums?

Go into Device Manager and find any devices in error with Yellow exclamation marks. Google the device to find the latest driver. You may need to trace it using Hardware Identification

You likely have a plug and play device which is malfunctioning. Unplug all peripherals to see. Make sure you have the exact error text and google to read more.

If the driver in question works and it passes the hardware tests then chances are a reinstall could help. It would at least clear the Software. Plus a reinstall is always a fresh start even better than getting a new computer since they are larded with factory bloatware.

But you want a perfect baseline clean reinstall following these same steps for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 with nothing else added or left out. Then we can help you troubleshoot better if necessary.

I unplugged all of my USB devices and did the scan for hardware changes after uninstalling the unknown device and it still shows up as unknown device installs it self and under hardware ID it says USB\UNKNOWN

its a really mystery for me now because if the USB ports are all unused what could it possibly be detecting.

How do I put the repair install on the thumb drive? It says that I cant use the tool due to a missing program but i tried to install it and it said xp only.

You don`t download a cd you download the iso file and then burn it to a dvd, not a cd. Follow Gregs instructions and you should not have any problems reinstallng W7.
