Solved How to know numbers of pin in RAM?

I want to upgrade my laptop RAM from 4 GB to 6 GB. Before buying the 4 GB RAM I have to know the exact pin of the RAM, and I don't know the exact numbers of pin in the RAM. My laptop is Ideapad Y550 4186. So how can I know the numbers of pins in the RAM without having to open the case? Please help!

It's 204 pin, but you need to know more than that.

That's a Lenovoe Ideapad Y550. I entered that make and model into the configurator at Crucial.com and it came back with the following compatible RAM choices for that laptop.

Computer memory upgrades for Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 (All Types) Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com

3 of those choices are for 2 GB sticks.

You can shop for those same Crucial part numbers from your source or buy 204 pin RAM from another brand as long as it has the exact same specifications.

Thanks sir!! One more question. If I add 2 GB RAM(398 Mhz) to one slot and 4 GB RAM(1033 Mhz) to the second slot will I get total 6 GB RAM? I know this is a silly question but I have heard that the two slot should contain same clock speed. Sorry for my English but I think you will surely understand!

Hi Ravi,

You will have 6GB total RAM, but the speed of both will be 398 MHz. The 4GB stick will not be utilized to its full speed. It will operate only at the speed of the other RAM stick.
It would be better if you had only the 4GB stick.

That laptop has 2 RAM slots. Are both slots occupied now? What speed is the RAM in those slots? You say you have 4 GB of RAM now, but I don't know if that is 2 sticks of 2 GB each or 1 stick of 4 GB.

First sorry for late reply. I was busy at my studies:geek:. I have two 2 GB sticks which occupied each two slots and both have 398 Mhz speed.

DDR3 DIMM's have 240 pins, but SO DDR3 DIMM's have 204 pins.
DDR2 is a 240-pin , DDR is a 184-pin module.
