How to move an application to new partition?

Hi all,

Just curious to know what the best way would be to move an application from 1 partition to another. Im looking to move my steam application as i have downloaded a lot of games and running out of space so i would like to put the whole application on a different parition.

Is it as easy as just changing the directory?

To answer your question -- NO. Presuming the app wrote stuff to the registry, there could be any number of registry keys that would each need to be changed to point to the new location of the app.

Not saying it can't be done -- but you have a lot of work ahead of you.

To move Steam to another location, first exit Steam and then move the entire Steam folder (probably “C:\Program Files\Steam”) to the destination folder. Delete the “ClientRegistry.blob” file found in the Steam folder and run Steam from the new location. Steam will reconstruct the deleted file and everything should be OK.

I know the article says Vista but it DOES work in 7, I did it myself before I got my 1 TB drive. Not to mention that this command is useful for things OTHER than Steam that aren't so nice as to provide a tool for making the move...

Absolutely, my method wouldn't work with anything else. OP asked about moving Steam specifically, so I showed him an easy way to do so
