Hello Mickey ok they are they because there are two "phone" devices on the one device hence headphones;)

Now so I have it right you have a PC and a laptop and the headphones unit is separate from them both?

Now it is my understanding that the phones unit would have too be connected to the PC output and from it the wifi signal travels to the phones. I don't quite get why you say you have to plug the unit into a socket near the PC the only reason for that is the unit needs the plug in for the signal from the PC. So say for example the unit for the wifi has a 2 metre lead to the power supply and the signal lead is 1.5 metres long then theoretically the plugs for the mains power supply for the PC and the signal device could be at most 3.5 metres apart to enable the unit to be connected to the PC.

Now depending on the wifi signal strength the phones should work at whatever range the phones are at from the PC. Now what I would try is to plug the output from the laptop to the input to the PC - being careful because the input will be the microphone one and VERY sensitive then the music or whatever from the laptop would go into the PC and then the PC should send via the unit the wifi signal to the phones. Now this of course depends on the number of inputs and outputs on the PC so you may have to connect the PC and laptop via a USB cable.

This all depends on the range of the wifi signal of course.

If his headphones are wireless then an extension cable is useless, because they don`t plug into a computer like a conventional pair of headphones. His transmitter gets plugged into the Desktop and the power outlet and he does not want to keep moving it.

Unlike mine where the usb transmitter plugs into the PC, and the headphones are charged up by a usb cable from the headphones to the PC. After the headphones are charged up I can remove the cable and walk around if I want to, and plug the usb stick transmitter into any other PC I want to, although I have no need for that.

Mickyd, how do your headphones work, what I mean is how are they charged up ?

Do you have to connect them to the transmitter ? Do they use a battery ?

As I mentioned in reply#4, if you set up a homegroup and all your PC`s are in the same Homegroup, you can listen to anything on your desktop from your laptop. :)

It`s very simple to do, just start by clicking on the Homegroup icon in the Control Panel.

I downloaded the user manual of his headphones and I actually read it before I made my post. The manual clearly states you also have the option to use a wired connection instead so the wireless transmitter can be bypassed if that's what you want. The sound quality might be affected by this, but choosing a longer cable to connect between the wireless transmitter and the laptop also can help to increase freedom of where the laptop can be placed (for the sake of better convenience and or finding a better spot in terms of WiFi connection stability on the laptop, etc.).

After reading all the posts and re-reading the OP's initial post, I think I understand what he wants to do.

The headphones claim to have a range of 300ft which hopefully is enough range for him to be in another room listening to music being played on his desktop. He wants to be able to control the music playing on his desktop from his laptop.

One way I can think for him to be able to do that is to use a remote connection to remote into his desktop from his laptop and then he would be able to change songs, pause, stop/start, etc... the music being played on his desktop from his laptop. As he said, use the laptop as a remote control. He could install TeamViewer on both computers to be able to do that. Or, if his desktop is running a "Pro" version of Windows, he could use Remote Desktop Connection.

Having said that, it seems like kind of a hassle just to use those headphones to listen to music in a different room. Personally, I would rather have headphones that plug into the laptop and then have my music saved on the laptop (more portable) or at least shared over the network from the desktop.

Another way to use use the headphones would be to plug the transmitter into the laptop and play the music on the laptop (leaving the desktop out of the mix) but that would require carrying the transmitter from room to room and plugging it into the mains there.

For the record, I have a pair of those headphones but I only use them to listen to TV late at night when my wife is asleep and use them only in the same room with the TV. They work great for that.

@hdmi - There is no place on the headphones to plug in the cable you suggested. The transmitter can be connected via RCA phono plugs or 3.5mm plug but the headphones themselves are wireless only.

Darn, and I just repd hdmi :(

Remoting in or setting up the homegroup would do the same thing, he could control what he wants to hear on his desktop from his laptop.

I think the homegroup option would be easier.

I disagree that setting up a Homegroup would do the same thing. The OP wants to be able to use his laptop to control the music playing on his DESKTOP where the headphone transmitter is plugged in. The Homegroup option would work fine if what he wanted to do was share the music files on his desktop and play them on his laptop. That would require plugging the transmitter into the laptop which he does not want to do.

Ya, I suppose you`re right, the music he chose to play from his desktop using the Home group option would play on his laptop, but he`d have to use another set of headphones plugged into the laptop, so ya that`s a no go.

Oops... it seems I have read the wrong manual. My bad!

Another option he could use is: MyURemote for windows - MyURemote - Universal Remote Control App
But unlike TeamViewer it's not free.

That's too bad. You could always get something like this to plug into a USB port: USB Sound Adapter
