How to prevent mouse from selecting text?

Over the past week or two I find that when I try to place the mouse cursor at a certain point in a text, the word, or sometimes whole line, is highlighted; not every time, but often. In open windows, after renaming files or other such actions, the mouse cursor then draws blue rectangles as I move it around until I left click to clear it, as if the right mouse button is pressed (which it isn't). This happens in open windows, in my browser, in Word documents.... not specific to any one programme

I tried changing the value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\DragWidth but this made no difference. I changed the mouse - again, to no avail.

Can anyone help with fixing this? Seems as if Windows is thinking I am double or triple clicking, when I am not,,,

Slow your double click speed down
I usually have it all the way to the left being the slowest
My mouser also has a driver utility included with it I do the same inside it

It is set less than half-way but I'll slow it down more. Odd, the setting hasn't changed, but the problem started recently. Will post again if this doesn't help.

This could be a defective mouse. Try another one.

Is your mouse set to "one click" function? Sometimes "double click" setting is helpful if the critter is too sensitive.

Another thought: is the mouse port defective, by any chance? Have you tried another? If you use a wireless one, perhaps the transceiver needs to be checked out.

OK, thanks, I have it plugged in via a USB hub.. I could try plugging it in directly, but this is on a laptop and I only have two USB ports, one 3.0 and one 2.0 (I use the latter for the mouse). It has worked for years plugged in through the hub...
