Hi, Normally 4 gb, 8gb, upto 64 gb pendrive if it is removed by not safely remove usb menu, is not getting corrupted and so, when it is plugged again, it does not create problem.
But , a 1.5 tb external portable hard drive having usb connection to pc, if not safely removed or power off occurs, then there is risk of total disaster for the data inside the hard drive, be it contains the backup of os , and huge data.
Sometimes, it does not allow to boot if it is plugged when you power on the computer, and hangs at prior boot stage, the motherboard symbol and hangs there.
Is it a fact, though it is not given in boot priority, it takes itself to boot from ext. hdd . This i noticed when i removed the ext.hdd. usb connection, the computer booted without any issue.
ext. hard disk are really helpful in times of backup or restoring the Os with applications.
How to safeguard , pl experts . A detailed solution would be helpful

ALL drives, pendrives, SSD or HDD should always be removed after a safely remove request. That is because the disk may be writing data on the disk. If you remove when data is being transfer it corrupts the disk.

There is no other safe way.

The size of the drive has little to do with the issue. If your data is important then using the safe removal menu is essential. With FAT32 you may get away with simply pulling the drive but it is still risky. With NTFS safe removal is particularly important. NTFS was never designed for removable drives and assumes it will be able to write to the drive at any time. In the interests of performance writes will often be deferred for a short while. If the drive is removed when there are pending writes you risk data loss or corruption. This can happen with drives of 4 GB or even smaller.
