How to Record TV to your Computer?

I have a HTPC that would like to use it to record TV programs. I have a Time Warner Cable service (subscription fee) but don't have DVR since it's a little pricey.

I did some research on-line and I think I need to get a cable card to be able to record TV programs on the computer but I am not sure. Where do you use the Cable card?

Can someone explain If I need a Cable card and what TV tuner is recommended. Additionally, If I want to record TV and at the same time watching TV using the cable box provided by Time Warner Cable, would that be any interruptions or anything?

If you want to record digital cable, you definitely need a cablecard from your provider. There are only three cablecard tuners manufacturers: Ceton, Hauppauge, and SiliconDust. The cablecard tuner is either external via usb or internal via pcie slot. The card is installed in the tuner. In order to watch while recording, you'll need a multi-stream tuner (but you'll still only need one cablecard).

Be warned, however - the only software that you can use to watch and record digital cable when using a cablecard is Windows Media Center. So, if you are using XMBC or some other front-end for your HTPC, you'll have to switch to MCE when watching TV.

I was not aware Warner Cable charged for a DVR. I have the Dish Network and it comes free when you sign up. You might check out the Dish and consider switching.

If you record anything to the DISH DVR you CANNOT transfer it to a DVD or external hard drive or anything because DISH has encoded the DVR with DISH only codes. :/
