Moreover, after copying some date it gives input/output error after several minutes and when I plugged in back than I can copy the same file/folder without that error. Can anyone tell me how to fix that error so I can copy all other data easily.

Sorry, I can't answer that question (your PM refers). (That is why I was keeping quiet :D) You have to try. No harm if you want to plug in your Peppermint pendrive on another system, boot into it and try to recover the data from the external casing into which you have put in the faulty drive. If it is a UEFI system, you may need to disable secureboot to be able to boot Peppermint from the pendrive.

I stand by what Jumanji said. :)

Trying with another system, cable to see if the transfer wouldn't increase. Otherwise you could just patiently wait and if there are any errors or difficulties with the transfers, you could consider more professional help.

For damaged and faulty drives, including RAW ones, it's hard to expect both speed and reliability, unfortunately. :/

Good luck!

You are receiving the I/O error from another drive or the same one?

I am quite familiar with the WD softwares available for users, and besides scanning and back ups (mainly), there isn't much I can offer, as additionally fixing I/O errors isn't such a simple task, especially considering you are dealing with a now RAW drive, meaning it's a corrupt file system. :/ The I/O errors would be due to the RAW file system (if it's the same drive) and to fix them you need to fix the RAW file system and find the lost partition with the data on it. Which is basically what Jumanji guided you through with the chkdsk option – to fix the errors on the drive and be able to access it. But fixing that could be difficult to do or nearly impossible, depending on the damage the partition on the drive has endured. :/

If you are speaking of another drive giving out the I/O errors, you could just remove it from the system, if this is the drive you are copying to, that isn't a wise idea as you are transferring your data from a damaged drive to a damaged drive. :/

If you are able to transfer data through the Live CD, and it takes a lot of time, just wait till it finishes. If you are not able to, considering we've tried a few methods already and that was pressure put on the drive any other software you'd try to “fix” the RAW WD drive could damage it more, and at this point I would suggest professional help.

Best of luck!

I am having I/O errors on WD drive not on another drive. While using Live CD it copies some data and after that it show I/O error and stop the transfer. I know this error is coming due to corrupt damage partition but I want to get that back also and than format it.

Checkdisk is not working though.

I'm sure there is,
The best way to install any linuz is on it's own ssd or hdd so remove the existing hdd... and simply install it on the new,
Get a external hdd enclosure and hook up the old hdd to it access the drive that way.

Hi jk22,

That is what CKWD said in his post #25 and that holds. You can't expect speed and reliability when recovering from a faulty drive.

If you do not know, just the process of cloning a HDD with too many bad sectors with ddrescue (to perform data recovery on the cloned drive) may even take a week.

So patience is the key in data recovery. It would appear to me that your faulty drive has too many weak/bad sectors and that is causing the problem - slow copying.

Anyway I am happy that Lucid Puppy is proving better for you.Just select a few folders/files at a time and let Lucid Puppy copy the files overnight.

It takes more than 4 days and it copied 7GB data on a folder which has total size 11GB but due to some technical battery issues laptop closed. Lastnight I have made few folders and seperated some folders on it but it was saying input/output error so I had just moved the folders into main directory and started the transfering process again. Hope it will take not long. :)
