Solved How To Remove/Change Permission on Loose HDD from other computer?

I had a computer die and I have the hard drive from it hooked into this computer.

Tried to copy all the files I wanted to keep off it so's I can format it and use for something else.

The (win10) copy prog keeps stopping and telling me I need admin permissions.

When I look at the permissions on the files they all refer back to the old computer.

This doesn't happen to all files so I don't really know what's going on.

Nor how to fix it.

Anyone know?

If, as your System Spec shows, you are running Windows 7 how come you are using Windows 10 copy program?

the broken hdd is from win7 and i'm trying to save the files off it onto a win10 computer.

don't worry, i found a way. had to go at the permissions a number of times, nothing worked for everything, there was no one thing I found that just solved it... but the thing that had the greatest effect was when i was able to share the files.... and the other thing was changing permissions for ordinary user... even though that ordinary user was specified as from that old system it seemed to be applicable to all users on this host...

I see. I was going to suggest that you use the "Take Ownership" as here:
Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
It could be useful in the future!

Yes, that's one of the things I did. It didn't fix everything, either, but was sometimes hugely succesful. But though I'd try these things (all these things) at top level and instruct for trickle down i'd get further and find something recalcitrant that required another attack.

Quite possibly I just wasn't doing things right. Haven't read your link yet but perhaps it will provide the 100% effective strategy. If I ever need it again. Which I well could. I have a number of old machines with a greater number of old drives and sooner or later I'm going to want to shift lots of that stuff onto a more spacious modern platform.
