How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

Once again, it`s the same update, Microsoft just keeps throwing it at us.

My preferred OS ? Where are we, what does it say in my specs ?

jhexp67 : I also plan to stay in windows 7 :)

AddRAM : A large list. I am comparing this with two other published lists to see if they are complete or to add to mine. I have the KB2952664 x2. But it is normal to have the others KB2952664(2014-2015) and not the last two(June-August ), right ? Sorry to repeat the question. I'm a noob at this :o

It doesn't really matter which version(s) of KB2952664 you see, there are many. Just don't install any of them is my advice. Unless you're planning on installing 10. No need to worry about which is which. If you want daily telemetry runs (and in my case hard drive thrashing) then install it.

There are now 13 versions of that update and I'm sure over the coming months there will be more. So, no need to concern yourself about which is which, just hide them when they next pop up. They won't get on your system unless you are set to install automatically.

They're all garbage as far as I'm concerned. :D

I would advise you NOT to skip any of those marked as security updates. The others are completely optional but I'd never skip a security update. If you're concerned about any update, then wait for a week after it's been published before installing. This will give enough time to read up on any issues.
Also do a system image of your C: Drive before you install them, if you're really concerned.

Some of the same updates that I have hidden do appear again.
I did register for Windows 10 update by clicking the Get Windows 10 icon but I changed my mind and I will not be installing the upgrade.

The main reasons for not upgrading to Windows 10
1/ I don't need or want to access the internet from the Start Menu
2/ I don't like the tiles
3/ I don't want to see advertising on the Start Menu

Do you think Linux Mint would appeal to Windows 7 users?

Maybe, I use Xubuntu as well as windows 7 & 10. The only thing I find Linux xfce mint doesn't display drives on the desktop like Xubuntu does for mounting and unmounting. There is probably a simple way to fix that

Do you think Linux Mint would appeal to Windows 7 users?
It depends on whether or not you need to commercial software (including games).
You can download themes to make it look similar to W7.

Installing drivers can be a pain.
All of my components worked out of the box though (with the default drivers).

IMO, the way the MATE GUI works is closer to Windows, than OSX is.
In some ways the file manager is better than Windows Explorer (e.g. tabs & twin pane).
It also has built-in virtual desktops (off by default).

You can run a Windows VM on a Linux Host OS.
I have VMware Player installed and I run a W10 VM on it.

Maybe, I use Xubuntu as well as windows 7 & 10. The only thing I find Linux xfce mint doesn't display drives on the desktop like Xubuntu does for mounting and unmounting. There is probably a simple way to fix that
You can change that in the settings in Linux Mint MATE.
I suspect there is a setting in LM XFCE too.

I believe Zorin is a better fit for win-7 users

Hello, I'm new here but have been lurking for several months (thanks for the helpful thread!). I got a slew of new Security Update notices today, along with a notice for 3075851, "Windows Update Client for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: August 2015", which is described as containing "some improvements to Windows Update Client in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. This update also resolves an issue in which certain Windows Update operations fail when you install Windows Update Client for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: July 2015 (3065987) on Windows 7 Embedded editions." http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3075851

The 'some improvements' business is making me a little suspicious. Can anyone suggest, please, whether this is more like an Optional update and might be safe to skip? Thanks! :)

(Also, I got 10 Security Updates today along with a Cumulative Security Update & also a Malicious Software Removal Update. All well and good, but I'm still a little puzzled: I thought Micro$oft was no longer supporting older systems. What's up with that?)

I would install the security updates.
The windows update client updates can be skipped if you're not installing 10.
And Windows 7 will still be supported until 2020.

I believe Zorin is a better fit for win-7 users
Zorin OS - Home

Yes there is a setting to not automatically mount drives in mint mate 17.1 ;)
I've seen people suggest Zorin on various forums.
It does look a lot like W7 (on the website).

Oops messed up quote :p

Yep my next project might just buy it
I believe last I looked Zorin ultimate is 15.us[/QUOTE]

Definitely worth the 15 Dollars. Might consider it myself in future.
At the moment, I don't think Windows 10 is for me, unless they make some changes.
I'm just not impressed so far.
I skipped 8/8.1 and will probably do the same with 10.

It's best to try it out for yourself really. Just do a system image backup of 7 so you can easily go back.
I'm not impressed so far but everyone will have a different view on it.
If you've installed it on your 8 machines and you're happy with it, then I see no reason for you not to install on your 7 PC too.

And a Partridge in a Pear Tree!
Just joined the forum, although I've been following this tread for 4 days - and implemented many solutions but still no working solution.

Summary:
I've removed and hidden 2952664; 3021917; and 3035583. Removed 2990214, 3 022345, 3065987.

However, when I have WinUpdate in my usual position (Check for updates but....), I get a notice that Windows 10 is ready to install. Reboot.

No matter how many times I reboot, the message still appears - AND (Thank goodness) nothing is installed.

If I change the WinUpdate to "Never check.... and check manually, the Win10 upgrade notice doesn't appear.

Suggestions? (Other than only check manually now :-) And no, I do not want Win10!
