how to send a fax (word doc) using my All-in-one printer

If I click on "save and Send" I see no option to send a word document using my fax machine (printer scanner). Shouldn't I be able to do so? And assuming yes, How do I do it?

Could you please tell us what version of Word you are using & what is the name & version of your printer/scanner/fax. Is your printer connected to your phone line.
The alternative is you could send it as an email instead.

Oh so sorry: Word 2010; HP Officejet J4580 and yes it is connected to my phone line
and, when you say, 'Send it as an email instead' wouldn't this imply to an email address? If so then that is not what I am looking for. When I send email, I send email and if I want to attach a document then I'll simply do it from there.

I only suggested sending it as an email as an alternative.

It is a long while since I have used a computer to send a fax & it required a fax program to be installed on the computer for that purpose. Do you often need to send faxes?.

If you only have an occasional need you could print the Word document & then scan & fax it from your printer/scanner/fax as it should do that easily.

No, I don't send faxes often. At times months could pass by without any need for it and at times a few can be sent a week. Insurance companies or other dealing with legal documents often require them.
Your idea to print and then scan is a good one were it not for wasting paper and ink (ink for the cost paper for the environment) so thanks for this (and all else as well).
As to using the HP directly, it was due to problems with its software that I was looking for an alternative.

Getting printer software sorted out can sometimes be a nightmare. I have a Canon MX300 that is a 3 in one machine, printer/scanner/fax, but I have never used the fax facility. While your HP 3 in one is a different unit you should be able to do it. A quick look through the Canon user manual says faxes can be sent directly from Word so obviously it can be done & you could assume that if the Canon unit can do it HP should be able to as well, but you have to weigh whether it's easier to do it another way if you only need it occasionally, rather than spend hours trying to get the software sorted out & hoping it will eventually work.

What version of Word are you using?

In Word 2013, when I bring up the print menu, my default printer is selected but I can also scroll down and select Fax. You have to setup your Fax settings the first time in order to send a Fax but after that it should be pretty easy to send a Fax.

Personally, I send very few Faxes and don't even have a phone line for my printer with built-in Fax to connect to. I use an on-line Fax service called PamFax which allows me to send files as faxes. You have to buy some credits ahead of time but they don't expire so if you don't send any faxes there is no monthly cost. I can send a Fax from my phone, tablet, laptop or desktop, don't need a phone line, just an internet connection. When you send a Fax the cost is $0.13 per page, deducted from your prepaid credits. I think I originally bought about $10 in credits about 6-7 years ago and I still have $7 of credit left (I told you I don't send many faxes).

When you install the Windows PamFax application, it puts a PamFax icon on the ribbon for you to send a Fax directly from Word.

BTW, I've found that many places (like insurance companies) that insisted on Faxes in the past will now accept emailed docs which is another reason why I send so few.
