How to set up a lean-mean machine for audio recording

Hey guys.
Sorry if this has been covered already, and if it has, please push me in the right direction. :)

I have a Dell Latitude D-630 with 4GB RAM and 300GB HD.
Windows 7 32bit new installation.
I have not done the majority of the updates because I don't think I really need them. I could be wrong.

All I want to do is use this laptop as an audio workstation (DAW)
Of course a couple of the programs required .NET so I installed that.
Seems after I did, the CPUs went haywire and are now pegging out at 100%.

So my question; What can I do to make this machine a bit faster? I do not use it for surfing the web or connect to my LAN. Any updates to my software I will use a jump drive or CD/DVD to perform those tasks.

If there is a list of processes and services that I can essentially turn off to help me in this endeavor, I'd love to see it so that I may accomplish my work.

Thanks in advance.

- Mike
